Raymond Pekar Obituary
Raymond R. Pekar

Raymond R. Pekar, age 79, died Sunday, April 14, 2013 at his home in Wausau after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Ray was born June 9, 1933 in Joliet, Illinois, the youngest of five children born to John and Anna (Medvesky) Pekar. Ray grew up in Joliet where he was named Outstanding Athlete in the Joliet Township High School Class of 1951. After serving two years overseas with the U.S. Army, he attended Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, Illinois, and graduated in 1958 with a bachelor's degree in Business Administration.

Ray married Elaine Vose on August 6, 1960 at St. Mary Magdalene Church in Joliet. They had two daughters, Marcia and Susan. In 1971, they moved to Wausau for Ray's job with Packaging Corp. of America. After a long and successful career in sales and as sales manager, he retired from PCA in 1993.

Ray's love of athletics continued into his adult years as an avid golfer, curler, skier and spectator. Sports were his favorite way to spend time with his family - golfing at the Wausau Country Club, where he recorded four holes-in-one during his lifetime. He also loved to curl, especially in mixed bonspiels with Elaine, Marcia and her husband Cal Tillisch. He attended numerous Green Bay Packers football games, even though he never lost his love for the Chicago Bears.

In his later years, he and Elaine enjoyed attending the girls' and grandkids' sporting events: Marcia at the curling rink, Susan on the golf course, grandson Ben on the hockey rink and golf course, and granddaughter Anna in gymnastics.

Ray was preceded in death by his wife, Elaine; his parents; his brother, John Pekar; and sister, Margaret Vargocko. He is survived by his daughters, Marcia (Cal) Tillisch of Wausau, and Susan (Christopher) Peloquin of Weston; and his grandchildren, Benjamin and Anna Peloquin. He is also survived by his siblings, Edward Pekar, and Mary Gasparich, both of Joliet, IL; sisters-in-law Barb (John) Pekar of Lockport, IL, Beverly (Vose) Kelton of Champaign, IL, Marilyn (Vose) Criche of Lake Forest, IL, Caryl (Vose) Thomas of Crest Hill, IL., Georgene (Vose) Edwards of Southern Pines, N.C., and brother-in-law Robert Vose of Fletcher, Mo.

Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 20 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 930 Edgewood Drive, Wausau. The Rev. Nancy Russell will officiate. Burial will be at Restlawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services at the church on Saturday.

Memorials may be given to the Wausau Curling Center, P.O. Box 627, Wausau.

The family wishes to extend special thanks to Ray's oncologist, Dr. Douglas J. Reding, and his primary care physician Dr. Mark A. Richetto for their care and support during Ray's lifetime and illness.
