It is with a heavy heart that we announce the sudden passing of Willem van Maanen September 14, 2020. Beloved son of Lijda and Hans Tiel, brother of Sonja (Bruno), uncle to Morgan. Willem was born in Rotterdam The Netherlands October 6, 1964 and immigrated to Canada with his family. With his love of sailing, Willem's career path led him to become a Marine Engineer. He had been employed with CSL for 35 years most recently as the 2nd Engineer aboard The Honorable Paul Martin. He will be sadly missed by Jeff Cameron his best friend of 40 plus years. Their passion of ship photography was known worldwide and will forever be remembered by his followers. Cremation has taken place and a Celebration of Life will be planned for the spring.

I met Willem many years ago when I worked in the CSL St. Catharines Office. We had a great rapport and I was fortunate to see him periodically walking my dog when he was home from the ship and lived then in my area. Last sat and had a meal with him a few years ago. We did a lot of reminiscing. I loved his ship photography! Taken too soon but rest in peace, my friend!

It was a long time ago, 1980... How many times did we stand alongside the canal together catching coins, photographing the ships and chatting for hours..? How many people did we know through the years..? How many people counted you among their best friends...? Today I was at the canal and felt utterly empty knowing that we'd never stand together there again.. We were at your house this evening and it was completely wrong that you were not there.. We stopped alongside the lake not far from your place as the sun set and wondered if you could see us looking up.. You were taken too soon my friend, you had so much life left to live, so many places still to see, so many trips still to take.. You enriched every person you met and helped anyone who asked.. Your legacy and kindness will live on in the memories of all who knew you. For the rest of my days I'll hope that we will one day stand along the canal together again and laugh as we so did so often.. From all of us, David, Brian, Chris, Laura and I rest well my friend, rest peacefully..
