Joan Brailey Turner passed on January 19th at the age of 94 at her home in Brookfield, CT, where she was cared for by her son, Seth. Born in 1926, she grew up in Newton, MA and graduated from Wellesley College in 1947. She married Urbain Victor Turner in 1949 and with him, raised five children, Joshua (Jay), Abigail, Jonathan, Seth and Peter, to whom she passed on her love of reading and music.
She began her professional career as a librarian in the 1960s, earning her Masters of Library Science from Columbia University in 1966. She held a series of positions that led to her becoming Director of the Westport Public Library from 1974 through her retirement in 1987. An accomplished violinist in her youth, she returned to the violin during her retirement years, playing and performing with several string quartets in Connecticut and New Jersey. She is survived by her five children, three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
