Mitchell M. Waife, age 91, passed away on Tuesday, January 6, 2015 at Jewish Senior Services (Jewish Home) in Fairfield. Mr. Waife was born in New York, New York a son of the late Marie Waife Goldberg, (author of the biography My Father Sholem Aleichem) and B.Z. Goldberg, (journalist and author). Mr. Waife was the grandson of the Yiddish author Sholem Aleichem, whose stories of Tevye were made into the play Fiddler on the Roof. Mr. Waife was also predeceased by his brother, S.O. Waife, M.D. Mr. Waife was the executive director of the Jewish Home and Hospital for the Aged (Jewish Home Lifecare) in Manhattan and the Bronx for 38 years. Mr. Waife was an outstanding leader and innovator in the field of Geriatrics. He was involved with State and National committees to promote best standards of care for the elderly. Mr. Waife started adult day care for the frail and blind, built the first hospital for the care of AIDS patients and built senior living apartments. Mr. Waife was a WW II Veteran having served with the U.S. Army Air Force in the European Theatre of Operations. Mr. Waife was an avid reader, enjoyed music and has a great sense of humor. He will be forever in our hearts and greatly missed. Mr. Waife is survived by his beloved wife, Adele Waife, devoted children, Sandra Rothenberg and her husband Steven, Robert Waife and his wife Laurene, and adored grandchildren Bradley, Lindsay, Benjamin, and Ari. Services were held on Thursday, January 8, 2015 at Temple Israel Cemetery in Norwalk. Memorial Contributions may be made in Mitchell Waife's memory to Jewish Home Lifecare, 120 West 106 St., NY, NY and Jewish Senior Services, 175 Jefferson St., Fairfield, CT 06825.
