Obituary Condolences

Wilson, Thomas W.
Thomas W. Wilson, Jr. of Westport, CT and Center Harbor, NH died unexpectedly of heart failure on March 9. An avid gardener whose flowers and vegetables were admired annually, a passionate sailor who raced one-designs from boyhood on, and an accomplished cook featured in Forbes Magazine for his homemade sausages, Tom was respected for his intellect and his mentorship by all who came to him for advice.
Tom was born in 1931 in Des Moines, Iowa and moved to Scarsdale, NY with his parents as a teenager. He graduated from Scarsdale High School in 1949. He earned a B.A. from Dartmouth College in1953 and then fulfilled his NROTC requirement serving as a Lt J.G. in the Navy on the USS Cambria. He subsequently earned an MBA from Wharton Business School in 1958.
Tom began his distinguished work career in brand management at Procter & Gamble where he worked for eight years. From there he was recruited by McKinsey & Co. in NYC where he worked from 1966 to 1990 and led the firm's consumer goods industry practice group for most of that time. During 1970-75, he directed McKinsey's work with the U.S. grocery industry's Ad Hoc Committee to develop the Uniform Product Code (UPC or bar code), which has become the well-known standard in information tracking and management of packaged goods, and with the European group that adopted a compatible version as the EAN code. He continued to act as an advisor to the UCC Board for the next fifteen years and was a founding member of the VICS Committee that developed the general merchandise standards for UPC usage. He was widely recognized as an authority in the field of consumer package goods marketing and spoke regularly at major industry forums. Following his retirement from McKinsey, Tom served as a corporate director for Fresh Fields Markets, Information Resources Inc., where he was chairman for five years and an interim CEO, and several other technology companies.
Tom is survived by many loyal and devoted friends, his brother, Charles Wilson, his daughters, Nell Reynolds and Gwen Miller, and the grandchildren of which he was extremely proud, Andrew and Max Miller and Peter, Andrea and Emma Reynolds. He was an extraordinary businessman, father, grandfather, mentor and friend, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew him. A funeral service will take place May 2nd at the Cedar Point Yacht Club in Westport CT from 4 to 6 PM
