I’ve known Buddy since the mid70s. He was one of the most outstanding men I’ve ever known. Spent a lot of time at Scopena. My best friend, Cherry Payne, lived there. Our children all played together there.
I’m so disappointed I couldn’t deliver my condolences in person. I have work being done on house. Please know I’m sadden by his leaving us too soon. ♥ to his family.

Rest In Peace, my friend. To the Roemer family, I am so sorry for your grief. He was my classmate and I always felt a special bond with him because we both grew up in farming families. I grew up on the Benton road and my dad grew cotton. Buddy was loved by his classmates and wAs always such a positive presence. May God be with you all and comfort you.

I was fortunate to meet Governor Roemer and his wife Scarlett while working at the LSU vet school. He was so kind, and he and his wife truly loved their pets and took amazing care of them. My deepest condolences to Mrs. Scarlett and the entire Roemer family.

I first met governor Elect Roemer during his transition while working for the Louisiana House of Representatives. I was loaned to the team working on his plans for dealing with the states deficit problems and his fiscal reform package. It was apparent early to me the he was extremely intelligent. But just as apparent I was surprised with his ability to work with Democrats and Republicans and college educated and those everyday working people from farmers to oil field workers. Perhaps more remarkable was his desire to keep learning notwithstanding his education. I remember while coaching my sons soccer team that one of his sons played on for a season that the Governor occasionally was able to find time to come to games but also to show up at practice where he did what he could to help including shagging balls.
After his time as governor was over if he would be driving downtown and saw me walking he never failed to stop and talk. Also he and I co-chaired Mayor elect Kip Holden’s finance transition team. At the completion our first planning meeting he said he need to make sure that I understand how
this was going to work. He said Carpenter you know that I you are going to do all the work but that he was going to get all of the credit to which I assured him I worked for 105 politicians and fully understood. I took this wordy way of saying how much I liked Buddy and will miss him. He was a hard man not to appreciate and be a friend.

Even though I have not seen him in many years I have Very fond memories of him when I was a kid. I remember sitting in his lap while he was at Frenchies waiting to get his hair trimmed. All the men in that place chatted up like a bunch of little ladies - he was friends with my dad. He was so kind to me and made me laugh. I was a super shy child but for some reason I wasn’t with him bc I actually sat in his lap. I am so very sorry for you loss. We will all miss him greatly.

Over 20 years ago I worked in state government in the Louisiana capital city, Baton Rouge. Many times at lunch I would head over to Barnes & Noble or Books-A-Million to do some book-browsing. Most times, there would be Buddy Roemer, standing in one of the aisles reading a book. He was a very approachable person and I would usually say hello and we'd chat for a few minutes. I could tell from our brief conversation that he was brilliant. It's a shame that he only served one term as Governor. Our state could have used more of his drive and wisdom.

I never met Buddy Roemer and I was not alive for his terms as representative nor governor. I am a senior at the Louisiana School for Math, Science, and the Arts, founded during the Treen administration in '83, focusing my study in history and currently working on a distinction project focused on the 1991 gubernatorial elections. I never met the governor, but in my many hours of research, I believe I have come to understand much of what he contributed to my state and the nature of his character. Through an incredible intellect and a great understanding of politics, he achieved something no other principled, good government, politician in Louisiana had done in a generation--political success. Once on the throne, he kept his principles even as his reforms staggered and the legislature, and slowly the people, turned against his revolution. I don't want to say too much about the past, because this isn't the place and because the obituary published in The Advocate did a better job than I could. Rather, I mention all this to offer some reconciliation to the family, friends, and state that lost Buddy Roemer: those of the next generation who care to look back on the history of our state will find in Buddy Roemer a man of great principle, wisdom, and faith; a man unwilling to bow the corrupting influence of political power nor compromise with racist demagogues; a man who hated nothing more than politics, and yet who loved nothing more than service to his state. I hope it helps, at least a little.

Now, the better part of a half-century later, it seems almost other-worldly: Buddy's invitation to work with him in that statewide election campaign was, put simply, a life-changer. As our friendship broadened and deepened over time, I learned how truly unique and brilliant he was ... and how much he had to offer Louisiana and its people. His four years as governor might well have kicked-off a far better time in our history, but, as we know, the majority of Louisianans had no such interest. Regardless, the end of his term in 1991 in no way ended his devotion to that cause. Buddy was a remarkable man at work in a remarkable Louisiana. Our Louisiana will miss him. I will miss him, and will always owe him. Rest in the Good Lord's Peace, my friend.
