David W. Smoot Obituary
HANNIBAL, Mo. -- David W. Smoot, 53, of Hannibal, died at 5:10 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2018, at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis.

David was born Oct. 13, 1964, in Marceline, to Warren T. and Mary L. Koehler Smoot. He was married to Kim Otten on July 5, 1985, in Hannibal. She survives.

David loved working for Knapheide Manufacturing in Quincy, Ill., as a truck pool chassis coordinator, loyal to the company for 16 years.

A patient, funny and loving husband and father, David always put his family first. Mechanically driven, David could fix anything. He loved to tinker on old cars. Special projects included restoring a '68 Cutlass with his son, Christopher, and most recently, his '71 Corvette.

Baseball was another passion that David enjoyed. Beginning with his Minnesota Twins, and ending with his diehard love of St. Louis Cardinal baseball, David shared this beloved pastime with his family. He loved attending games together, coaching, and teaching his children everything he knew about the game.

Collecting and listening to music, especially vinyl records was something that David cherished sharing with his daughter, Stephanie. David had an amazing sense of humor and shared with his daughter the appreciation for Steve Martin, Mel Brooks, Monty Python and silly B-rated movies.

Whether his perfect pancakes with crispy edges or a masterfully grilled burger, David was a talented cook in his own right. David's furry companions were always a part of his life enjoying the company of many pet dogs over the years. An Eagle Scout at age 13, David always maintained a connection with the Boy Scouts of America, particularly trips to Philmont, the Boundary Waters, and the National Jamboree in Fort A.P. Hill, Va. Most of all, David simply cherished the time he shared with family. Being a husband and a father were his greatest joy.

David was a Catholic by faith, enjoying Knights, Cursillo and CHRP.

In honor of David please consider signing up to become an organ donor. David benefitted from this wonderful gift and encouraged those around him to save a life.

Other survivors include his mother, Mary L. Smoot of Hannibal; two children, Christopher D.W. Smoot Ph.D. (Rob'yn) of San Diego and Stephanie J. Romph (Brandon) of Tulsa, Okla.; one sister, Michele L. House (Gary) of Center; nieces, Christina Brewer (Robby), Maggy Otten and Molly Green; nephew, Steven Smoot; great-nieces and goddaughters, Lydia and Addison Brewer, and great-niece Luci Green.
