Donna Kay (James) Kohl Obituary
QUINCY -- Donna K. Kohl, 75, died Thursday, Aug. 2, 2018, at Springfield Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center in Springfield, Mo., with her son and daughter by her side.

Donna was born Nov. 15, 1942, in Topeka, Kan., to Donald D. James and Shirley V. (Slocum) James. She graduated from Kirksville Senior High School in 1960. She was active in the Geography Club and yearbook staff. She then attended Gradwohl School of Laboratory Technique in St Louis, graduating the following year.

Donna married W. James "Jim" VanMeter on March 24, 1962, in Kirksville, Mo. They had two children, Mark D. VanMeter and Jayme L. VanMeter.

On Oct. 21, 1981, Donna married Nicholas A. Kohl IV in Palmyra, Mo. She worked as a laboratory technician at J.M. Huber Corp. in Quincy, retiring in the late 1990s.

Donna enjoyed the outdoors and was an avid flower and vegetable gardener. She loved all animals, especially her Newfoundland dogs, Teddy and Ben. Donna showed compassion for others by mentoring adults in reading and writing and was a regular blood donor. She was an active member of Vermont Street Methodist Church in Quincy where she went on mission trips, was a church greeter and helped count money from the weekly offerings.

She is survived by a sister, Deborah (Marvin) Risner of LaPorte, Texas; her son, Mark (Jennifer) VanMeter of Kansas City, Mo.; her daughter, Jayme VanMeter of Springfield, Mo.; stepchildren, Denise (Dain) Meyer of Chicago, Cynthia (David) Root of Mendon, Alisa (Chris) McDonald of Liberty, Nicholas A. V (Jennifer) Kohl of St. Louis and Dr. Jessica (Dr. Thomas) Woodruff of Lafayette, Ind.; a niece; two nephews; and several stepgrandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Donna was preceded in death by her grandparents, Alva and Alta (March) Slocum; her parents, Donald and Shirley James; and husband, Nick.

SERVICES: 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 25, at Hudson-Rimer Chapel in Edina, Mo., with burial to follow at Pleasant Ridge Church and Slocum Cemetery in Baring, Mo.

MEMORIALS: In lieu of flowers, for the care of Slocum Cemetery which was founded by Donna's great-grandfather, Homer Slocum, in 1875. Donations may be mailed to Hudson-Rimer Chapel, 408 E. Morgan, Edina, MO 63537.
