Mary Atkins Padia
January 12, 1924–January 23, 2018

Mary A. Padia peacefully passed away January 23, 2018 at St. Paul's Towers in Oakland at the age of 94 with surviving children, Patti and Tom, at her side. Born in Detroit, MI to Gertrude Mary Shaw Atkins and Reverend Robert M. Atkins, both Canadian. Siblings George, Alice and Alan, all deceased. Daughter of a Methodist minister, the family moved from parish to parish including Birmingham, Pontiac and Flint, MI and Madison WI. After graduating high school in Flint at age 16 moved to Whittier in 1940 to attend Whittier College, earning a B.A. and teaching credential. Met Morris J. Padia, Whittier native, in teaching program and wed May 25, 1946. Taught for five years before leaving to raise a family: Robert M. Padia (deceased), Thomas A. Padia (Julie) and Patricia Alice (Padia) Watters (Patrick). Active in the First United Methodist Church, East Whittier Woman's Club, AAUW, LWV, P.E.O. Hobbies/interests included bridge, needlepoint and baseball. After 58 years in Whittier, following death of Morris in November 1996, moved to St. Paul's Towers in Oakland in 1998 to be near Tom (Oakland) and Patti (Sacramento).
Devoted grandmother of seven (Kyle, Cody, Karly, Lauren, Evan, Lilly and Tasha) and great grandmother of three (Anthony, Gabriella and Elliana). Also survived by nieces, Canadian cousins and extended family. Services Monday, February 26, 11 a.m. at Rose Hills Rainbow Chapel with reception to follow.
