Edward Deusser Obituary

Edward A. Deusser, age 71, of Mashpee, Mass., passed away on Sunday, September 20, 2020, surrounded by his family at home after a long illness. He was the loving husband of 48 years to Andrea (Wills) Deusser, and cherished father to Tommy, Becky, and Martha Deusser. His family will treasure his optimism, kindness, humor, and courage. Mr. Deusser grew up in Watertown, NY., son of the late Edward C. Deusser and Mary Catherine (Phillips) Deusser. He is survived by his three siblings and extended family: Ann (Deusser) Bohne and Peter Bohne, Thomas and Janet Deusser, Rosemary Deusser-Jensen and Arthur Jensen, all of Watertown, Ny. He was brother-in-law to Jim and Celine Wills, of Mashpee, Karen Darrah, of Mashpee, and Dottie and Bob Sullivan., of West Yarmouth. He was uncle to many and dearly-loved nieces and nephews. Mr. Deusser dedicated his career to education, starting out as a school teacher in Watertown, Ny., and in Mansfield, Mass. He spent much of his career as an administrator in the Barnstable school system, where as Principal he led the process of Marstons Mills East Elementary School becoming a Horace Mann Charter School (now the Barnstable Community Innovation School). After his retirement, Ed and Andrea moved to St. John in the U.S. Virgin Islands for several years, where he was Headmaster of the Gifft Hill School, and helped the school achieve its reaccreditation from the MSACS Commissions on Elementary and Secondary Schools. Mr. Deusser had an enduring love of the beach, and Cape Cod was his home for more than 33 yrs. He enjoyed playing and watching sports, including football, basketball, and golf. He was an avid reader. Mr. Deusser was a parishioner and eucharistic minister at Christ the King Parish in Mashpee for many years. He graduated from Immaculate Heart Central School in 1968, and went on to earn his bachelors degree in education from St. Francis College in Biddeford, Maine, a masters degree in education from Bridgewater State University in Bridgewater, Mass., and a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study in Education from the University of Connecticut in Storrs, Conn. A funeral Mass and interment of his cremated remains will be scheduled later this Fall, and details will be shared at that time through Doane, Beal and Ames Funeral Home in Hyannis, Mass. You never forget a really great teacher. Mr Deusser was my favorite. He was fun, talked with us, not just to us. He had a passion for incorporating science and media into our first grade curriculum that wasn’t the standard back then.

We gave him a good scare when he left the room momentarily and we climbed up on chairs to lean out the large open windows of our Edwardian era school building.

He encouraged me. When I wasn’t making friends yet at my new school he let me stay in the classroom at recess to draw and chat with him. Eventually he very kindly said that I needed to join the kids on the playground because it was best for me. I was a little hurt but he was right I eventually made lifelong friends.

Rest In Peace Mr. D...you’ll be in my happy school memories forever. ❤
