John W. Walsh IV

1949 - 2017

John Walsh Obituary

Patient, innovator, visionary in voluntary health services. John W. "JW" Walsh IV of Miami, FL, passed away peacefully on March 7, 2017 surrounded by his family. He is survived by his devoted wife, Diane, his daughter Linda and granddaughter Lily. Also surviving are his twin brother, Fred Chase Walsh, and his sisters Susan Walsh Ferro and Judith "Juba" Walsh. John was born on February 4, 1949 to the late Helen Chase Walsh and John W. Walsh III. An Eagle Scout and President of Arlington High School's Class of 1967, he attended New Hampton School and Norwich University. He served in U.S. Special Forces and had a varied and distinguished career as an entrepreneur. In 1989, John and his brother Fred were diagnosed with Alpha-1 Antitripsin Deficiency, a chronic genetic form of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). This condition led to the early death of their mother and required Fred to undergo a double lung transplant in 2016. This diagnosis inspired John to co-found the Alpha-1 Foundation and to pioneer innovative approaches to fund education and support for patients and research programs to find a cure for Alpha-1. John's activism helped shape national and international public policy on genetic conditions and his leadership and compassion provided inspiration to many within the COPD community. For more information contact the Alpha-1 Foundation at www.alpha1foundation.org or the COPD Foundation at www.copdfoundation.org. A Family Service will be held in Arlington at a later date.

John impacted so many lives in such a special way. I was a LPN in 2016. Meeting John and his family is what encouraged me to go back to school and become a RN. Here it is years later and I am able to teach my classmates about Alpha-1 because of that moment in my life. I know it has been years but I was thinking about that time in my life and my deepest condolences still go out to the Walsh family and friends and all who received the blessing to be in his presence. Always in my thoughts and prayers. His legacy lives on through all of us. "Keep the faith"

John was a kind, caring and inspiring man. He truly cared for others and moved the Alpha-1 research more than anyone. I worked with him in a Human Resources capacity for a while and it was a pleasure getting to know him. My thoughts are with the family, friends and other Alpha-1 folks. Know that you were loved, John. Susan Stinson, Raleigh, North Carolina (formerly of Miami Springs, FL).

It is a very sad day for the Walsh family and the Alpha1 community. I have known the Walsh family since 1994, and consider them as my family. If not for the entire family our community would never even existed. Thank you everyone who helped John and Diane on their. Mission to find a cure! Keep his dream alive and get involved, we still need to find that cure!
Much love to all, Keep the Faith John would always tell me, as we would part ways. John, I hope you, Coach and Helen are having a reunion!
