Phyllis (Raymond) Newman, 96, of Harvard, died on December 21, 2012 at LifeCare Center of Nashoba Valley in Littleton MA. She was born in Cambridge, MA on October 26 1916 daughter of the late Arthur and Emma (Graves) Raymond and was the wife of the late Churchill A. Newman who died in 1983. She graduated from Northfield School for Girls in 1935 and Simmons New England Deaconess Hospital Nursing School in 1938. Phyllis married Churchill in 1939 She previously lived in Acton and then moved to Harvard, their home for the last 59 years She and her husband operated New Manor Hall, a private patient nursing facility, in Harvard from 1953-1969. She then worked at Emerson Hospital in Concord as a staff nurse on the maternity wing from1970 to 1980. Mrs. Newman was active in her community and served on several boards. The Minuteman Home Care, Harvard Elder Housing Committee, The Harvard Council on Aging, -and the Sixty Plus Club. She was a member of the Harvard Congregational Church United Church of Christ, The Harvard Garden Club, The Harvard Historical Society, Fruitlands Museums and Tower Hill Botanical Gardens. Phyllis enjoyed traveling and had visited 53 countries. Her survivors include her son Gregory A Newman and his wife Karen of Harvard MA. and her daughters Muriel N. Healey of Leominster and Alison C.N. York and her husband William of Hebron, NH. She was also the mother of the late Charlene N Davis of Sterling MA.,She leaves 6 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews A Memorial Service will be held at the Harvard Congregational Church, United Church of Christ Still River Road, Harvard, on Saturday January 19, 2013 at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to the Harvard Congregational Church. Please see

Phyllis Newman was a long term and much loved member of the Garden Club of Harvard as well as the Harvard Woman's Club and she will be missed by many friends who admired her sharp mind and interest in all our lives to her last days. We will keep her in our memories as our role model for moving into old age gracefully.
