I have lost touch with Dr Fox's daughter over the years, so I just learned of this now. I am deeply saddened. Sandy always had so much respect and admiration for her dad and his accomplishments. My sincere condolences to the whole family.

I am very sorry to learn of Dr. Fox's passing.
I must confess that I learned of Dr. Fox only very recently while doing some research on my step dad, Mort Altschuler who conducted the band on the Missouri.
Please accept my sincere condolences,

My memories of Uncle Tom are inextricably entwined with my own family memories: hanging out at 676 East Pleasant Street; playing hide-and-seek and other games there with Cindy, Sandy and my sisters, Donna and Kathy; listening to the laughter of the Amherst Philosophical Society (APS) members at our home at 500 West Street; the rich, nutty smell of Uncle Tom's Pipe; visiting him and Aunt Jean with my own kids on Cape Cod; dropping in to see him at his office in Stockbridge Hall, and much more. He was a warm, caring person, and a cherished member of the Mellen family. I will miss him.

Our long and cherished friendship with Tom and Jean goes back to Spring semester, 1946, at Massachusetts State College in Amherst. Tom and Bill, both recently discharged (honorably) from the U.S. Army, chose the same major (chicken-plucking), and both went on eventually to earn Ph.D.’s at Purdue and Cornell, respectively. But back to 1946: While Tom diligently pursued his major, his major interest soon became the pursuit of comely Jean Manning. We were honored to serve in their wedding party in 1948.
A series of fortuitous events led us, with our three young daughters, back to Amherst in 1958, when Bill joined the UMass Poultry Science Department, headed by Dr. Thomas W. Fox. This move not only helped Bill’s academic career, but enabled closer and more frequent interactions between our two families. Also, it offered Bill the opportunity to become a member of the Amherst Philosophical Society, of which Tom was a charter member. (The Society’s motto: Illegitimati Non Carborundum.)
And so……here we are today, September 10, 2011. Tom has been laid to rest on Cape Cod, and Jeanie and her daughters and grandkids and friends must adjust to this new vacancy. We will all do so, of course.

Dear Jean, Cindy, Sandy and families,
I think that early connections must etch themselves into our beings. As I looked at the pictures of my Uncle Tom, Aunt Jean, and childhood friends, I had an immediate sense of each of you and of our times together so many years ago.
Tom and Jean were part of the circle of adults in my life who helped to create a sense of security and well being. The last time I saw Tom was at my folks’ house a few years ago. I was struck by the warmth of his greeting and that wonderful smile. I feel the loss in his having left this world.
I send you my love and caring and am holding you in my heart.

September 7, 2011 On be-half of the entire Sagar family, I would like to extend our deepest condolences to my Aunt Jean, Cindy, Sandy and their families on the loss of my uncle. His contributions to our country during WWII, and to our society as an educator, earn him a special designation who exemplifies what a true American Hero is. My uncle is a true representative of "the greatest generation". His military service and vocation tells only a small part of who this man was. His first love was always his family and friends. He was always a gentleman. His quick wit and great personality, when combined with all his life experiences and knowledge, made any conversation very enjoyable and interesting.During my youth, I always enjoyed our trips to Amherest especially during the summer, when we enjoyed his garden; he always had a great garden! His passing leaves a void for all of us, but I'm sure Tom & May will be happy to see him in heaven. God bless him.

I wish to express my condolences to Dr. Fox's family and also say how privileged I was to have been touched by his intellect, passion for genetics and caring for others. I was a student at UMass in the late 70's and took his genetics class, and as they would say today, "he turned me on", to the wonderful field of genetics. He taught the class with great enthusiasm, emphasizing the importance of genetics in improving agriculture and the society that we live in.
I later went on pursue a Ph.D. in genetics and now work in the field of dairy cattle genetics. Over the years, when I would visit UMass, I would always try to stop by and see Dr. Fox. He took great pride in that I continued to study genetics, but, more than that he took great interest in me as a person. It was in the post student years, that I came to know him as a person. And what a person he was. His enthusiasm of life, his excitement in learning, his interest in others, I've been blessed to know him and will miss him.
I'll think of him often and keep him in my heart.

Our love and sympathy to you, Cindy, and to all of your family.
Your dad was a remarkable man, who left a great educational legacy to the world of veterinary and animal science. Carrie treasures the book from his personal library, which you so generously sent over to her recently.
His "quick wit and generous heart" was obviously passed on to his equally remarkable, intelligent, and loving family. How lucky you were to have him, and how lucky he was to have you!
You're in our thoughts at this sad time,
The Fyfe Family

Dear, dear special friends: Even in sadness, I am flooded with happy, loving memories of the wonderful friendship Cindy, Sandy, Peggy and I shared during our formative years and beyond. I will always remember the twinkle in your Dad's eye as he welcomed me continually into your extended family with warmth and good humor. (I still remember how he giggled at me once down the Cape when Sandy gave me a slotted spoon to eat chowder with and it took me way too long to realize why I wasn't getting any food into my mouth!) Our daughter Joann is in her final year of vet school at Michigan State and I will be sure to contribute to MSU's School of Veterinary Medicine in Tom's honor. I send hugs of love and sympathy to all of you at this sad time. Phil Greenfield
