Richard Nichols Obituary

Richard Frederick Fuller Nichols, Jr. known to some as Richie died at age 81 at Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis, Maryland at 9:01 a.m. on October, 30, 2012. He was the son of the late Richard Frederick Fuller Nichols and Mabel Manchester of New Canaan, Connecticut and Orleans, Mass., and the grandson of Arthur Boylston Nichols and Gertrude Fuller Nichols of Cambridge and Orleans, Massachusetts. He was the loving father of Elizabeth Nichols Green of Annapolis, Maryland and Richard Frederick Fuller Nichols, III of Manchester, Vermont. His grandchildren are Ian Nichols Green, Lindsey Dana Green and Jade Fuller Nichols.Richie Nichols was born in Tarrytown, New York on October 12, 1931. Soon after he moved to Vista, New York where he spent his childhood. He attended Low Haywood school, the Eaglebrook School, Choate and New Canaan High School where he graduated in 1949. Richie entered Harvard University in 1950, briefly interrupted by a tour in the U.S. Army at Ft. Dix. A member of the Hasty Pudding Club and singer in the Harvard Krokodiloes, he graduated from Harvard in 1954. Nichols career started in business, including stints with General Electric and American Metal Climax Company (now Cypress Mining). He attended Columbia University School of Business at night while living in New Canaan, CT. Richies work soon migrated toward finance starting with a job as a field analyst which led to successive jobs in the investment sector. He eventually landed at the helm of an old investment firm, Van Cleef, Jordan and Wood, Inc. in New York City where he worked until selling the business in 2007. Richie was a member of the New York Society of Security Analysts as well as the Harvard and Yale Clubs.Richie loved to sing in the Episcopal Church Choir in New Canaan as well as in various quartets in Fairfield County in his spare time. He was a collector of antiques and was handy repairing and refinishing furniture. He loved old homes.His final years were spent in Westport, Connecticut and then briefly at the Fairfield Home in Annapolis where he could be closer to family. The service will be November 24, 2012 at 11 am at the Nichols Family Plot in the Orleans Cemetery, Orleans, MA.
