Rev. Dr. Gary W. Smothers

Rev. Dr. Gary W. Smothers, of Holbrook, passed away after a brief period of failing health, April 1, 2016 at the age of 81. Gary was born in Iowa and was raised in the small town of McGregor. He graduated from the University of Dubuque, Iowa, where he met and married his wife, Delores (Dee) Kubatzke. They were married for 60 years when Dee passed away in August 2015. The Rev earned his masters and doctoral degrees from Andover Newton Theological School. After serving at churches in Marshalltown, Iowa, Neosho, Missouri, and Galesburg, Illinois, Gary was called to Winthrop Congregational Church in Holbrook. He was pastor there for 30 years and for the last decade he was accompanied by Dee as church organist. After retiring from Winthrop and full-time work, Gary went on to serve as associate minister at Bethany Congregational Church for 10 years. He was passionate in the ministry and felt blessed that he had been called to be part of both congregations. He especially loved childrens sermons and visiting shut-ins. He was a member of the Holbrook Rotary Club for years and was chair of the Holbrook School Committee. Gary loved travelling the world with Dee, dining out, singing and spending time with family. No matter where he was The Rev could be found making his rounds, talking to everyone, whether long-time friend or someone he had never met. No one was a stranger to Gary. He is survived by his daughter Jeanne Parker and her husband Bruce of Arundel, Maine and his son Jay R. Smothers of Holbrook. Reposing at the Cartwright Funeral Home, 68 So. Relatives and friends were respectfully invited to attend visiting hours Tuesday, April 5, from 10 a.m. to noon in the funeral home, followed a funeral service at 1 p.m. in Bethany Congregational Church, 18 Spear St., Quincy MA.
