Alan Wachman Obituary

Alan M. Wachman age 53, (LHS 76), passed away peacefully on June 21, 2012. He died surrounded by loved ones, who supported him throughout an heroic year-long battle with pancreatic cancer. Beloved by family and cherished by friends and colleagues, Alan was highly creative both as scholar and artist, passionately devoted to his wife and children, dedicated to the welfare of his parents, and supportive of his brothers and their families. He was a respected teacher, committed to his students at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University, where he was an Associate Professor of International Politics. Formerly, he served in New York as president of China Institute in America and, before that, was the American Co-Director of the Johns Hopkins University-Nanjing University Center for Chinese & American Studies in the PRC. He earned an A.B. in Fine Arts and an M.A. and Ph.D. in Government from Harvard University, as well as a M.A.L.D. from the Fletcher School. His immediate survivors include his wife, Laura Hess; his children, Rachel Hess Wachman and Daniel Hess Wachman; his parents, Barbara and Harold Wachman of Lexington; brothers Josh Wachman of Newton and Joel Wachman of Cambridge. A funeral service was held on June 22, 2012. Alans family requests that donations be made to the Professor Alan M. Wachman Memorial Fund at the Fletcher School at Tufts University, 160 Packar Ave., Medford, MA 02155. This fund will support Fletcher students engaging in international non-profit work, and reflects Alans fundamental belief in the importance of making the world a better place.

Although I did not know Alan personally, I have only heard great things about him. And I have the pleasure of knowing his brother -- my brother -- Joel. I am sure a little bit of Alan has survived through the lives of those who knew and loved him. To them I say thank you for continuing his spiritual legacy. All my love, Marc Clinton

I am so sorry to hear of Alan's passing. My wife Paulette and I want to express our deepest condolences to the entire Wachman family. To Joel, my Krokmate and classmate I am thinking of you. I can only pray that in the face of such loss that all that loved Alan can find a way to celebrate his life now and into the future. Of one thing we can be certain - bodies pass away in time. Spirits live forever. To the spirit that is Alan, we wish you well.

All our love and condolences to the Wachman family. Although I knew Alan only as a fellow college (and Krok) alum through emails and occasional encounters, he left a deep impression on me. I will always remember his compassion and honesty, and his extraordinary range of talents. We send our warmest wishes and will be thinking of you.

To Laura and the children (who I don't know) and to Joel (who I haven't seen in years) I am devastated to learn of Alan's passing. He was a good friend in college, a fellow Krok, a hell of an artist, and he was simply taken too early. My condolences and prayers to all of you.
