Elizabeth Laudin Obituary

Elizabeth "Betty" Anne Laudin, passed away on December 21, 2020 after a long and courageous battle with Parkinsons Disease. She had been a life-long resident of Melrose, Mass. until 2014 when the best course for her care meant moving her out west to be near her brother and sister-in-law. Betty Anne, the daughter of the late Fred W. and Elinor (Giles) Laudin, faced lifes challenges with courage and great compassion for all who crossed her path. Her diminutive body carried a huge heart. She loved people, pets and food, in no particular order. She constantly surprised those who were close to her with her accomplishments. Betty Anne graduated from Melrose High School in 1965 where she co-captained the softball team and also played field hockey and basketball; she was light and fast and honored to be The Most Athletic Girl in her graduating class. She was an avid member of the Ski Club in high school, a sport she followed for some time after school, including a ski trip Zermatt, CH. She attended Vermont College before becoming a trained phlebotomist which landed her a job at Melrose-Wakefield Hospital in the early 70s. She was loved by her patients for her cheery approach to a dreary task, but as her PD became more pronounced her days at the hospital were numbered and she retired early. Her tennis game fell away in time, but she loved golf with The Hood-Winks. She played her last round of golf in 2016 after moving to California. Despite the move west, she remained loyal to her Boston teams, watching as many Bruin, Red Sox, Patriots and Celtics games as she could. She was thrilled a couple of years ago to get a group phone call from some of her high school classmates at a class-reunion back east. Betty Anne was a 12th generation American, tracing her roots to the Mayflower and she was a Daughter of the American Revolution. She was born December 12, 1946; passing away at age 74 years - 9 days. She is survived by her brother Brooks, his wife Jamie, two nephews and a niece, plus seven grand nephews and nieces. Melrose was her "home;" she will be interred in the family plot at Wyoming Cemetery. Betty Anne was a dear friend, neighbor, and touch-football player with our Youle Street kids.
I have many memories of our times together, and tree-climbing was another one. My first time seeing something on TV was at her up-the-long-driveway big red house, across the street from where I lived (Queen Elizabeth's coronation).
My first hospital stay needed blood tests, and the only person who could find the vein was Betty Anne. She was famous for her phlebotomist abilities at MWH.
She never mentioned Parkinsons.
I remember my Girl Scout troop working with her troop in learning knots. Thankfully I was paired with Betty Anne, so sitting across from each other I could show her bowline (and other) knots from a right-hander to a leftie.
As another 12th-generation Mayflower descendant, we must have many relationships than we had ever known.
I just learned of Bambi's passing in a 2021 Christmas note from Joanie, another of our neighborhood gang.
My condolences to Brooks and his family. It is hard to lose family, whatever their age or ours - neighbors are family.
