Aletha Christiansen - Obituary December 4, 2017

Aletha Christiansen passed away peacefully on December 4th in Santa Rosa, California after battling Parkinson's Disease for over 20 years. She was 88 years old. She was born in Atlanta, Georgia on September 20, 1929 to parents Charles and Maybelle Crawford. When Aletha was 8 years old, she spent a year in Trinidad, a highlight of her childhood.

Aletha attended high school at Oshawa Missionary College where she met and fell in love with her husband, Walter Alva Christiansen at the tender age of 17. They were married for 60 years before he passed. They started their family in Walla Walla, Washington. In 1956 with four children in tow, Walter and Aletha settled in the small community of Laytonville, California where Walter taught school.

With encouragement from her husband, Aletha started taking night classes at Sonoma State University. She graduated with a degree in elementary education and was a member of one of the first Sonoma State University graduating classes. Her first teaching job was in Branscomb, a neighboring town of Laytonville. She had a small school to herself and her students, teaching 1st through 3rd grades. In 1964 the Branscomb school closed and she taught 4th grade at Laytonville Elementary School for the remainder of her career. She retired in 1988.

Aletha's passions were family and teaching. She loved her family, friends and students unconditionally. Her love spread over the many generations that she touched. Even though Aletha and her husband moved out of Laytonville and relocated to Santa Rosa in 2002, they still live on in the hearts of the community they served for over 40 years. She also loved playing piano and listening to music, planting flowers in her yard, and traveling with her husband and family. With her family, she visited almost every state, Canada and Mexico. Later on with her husband, they traveled to Ireland, England and Norway.

Survivors include daughter, Caron Mae Ramsey-Lewis (Robert); son, Arnold Ray Christian
sen (Lynn); daughter, Sandra Lou Grant (John); and son, Charles Walter Christiansen. Additional survivors include brother-in-law, Arnold Reuel Christiansen (Lina); 11 grandchildren, Jarrod Nesom Ramsey-Lewis, Rhea Ann Reinbold (Chris), Chelsie Rogers, Kenneth Crain, Chad Christiansen, Zoe Rae Christiansen, Arnold Race Christiansen, Arleetah Carrie Johnson (Carlous); Sylvia Carla Grant, John Richard Grant III (Gail Lu); Ryan Walter Grant (Ann Grant Liu); and 4 great-grandchildren, Carlous Johnson II (Tianna); Jesse and Lucas Rogers (twins); Langston Grant; and 1 great-great grandchild Carlous Johnson III.
