Douglas Eugene Campbell Obituary
Douglas Eugene Campbell was born August 22, 1951 in San Jose, CA and passed away September 3, 2017 in Piercy, CA. He grew up in San Jose where he attended public high school and would later receive a BA degree in Agriculture from Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo. Doug also attended the College of the Redwoods and served as substitute teacher there. Doug was an avid reader, a dedicated history buff, an artist and a world wide traveler.
Doug was manager of the Old Port Fishing Company in Avila for many years. He was also a rancher following that time. Doug later began a ten year career as Assistant Factory Manager on the ship, Arctic Storm, on the Bering Sea with his brother Don. Doug, Don and Doug's wife Carol began an adventure on the Redwood Highway when they became owners of Confusion Hill in 1999. Doug loved his community and worked tirelessly for the Minnie Stoddard Lily Memorial Bridge, also establishing the Confusion Hill historical point of interest, and many other community activities. Doug wore many hats as owner of Confusion Hill. He was known as the Confusion Hill's train Engineer, and ironically as the notorious train robber, Derailing Doug. Like many who carved out their lives along the Redwood Highway, Doug was an amazing entrepreneur with a true pioneer spirit and wonderful humor.
Doug is predeceased by his parents, John and Geraldine Campbell, his brother Donald Ralph Campbell, and their "Nana", Grace Friend. Doug is survived by his wife of 20 years, Carol Pankowski Campbell. His son Casey Campbell, Casey's mother Candice Dee Boylan, Casey's wife Michelle and their three children: Madison, Jessie, and Christopher. His stepsons: John, Phillip, and Jeff Pankowski. His uncle Gene Friend, his wife "Aunt Sue;" their daughter Kathy Friend Banks, her husband Ed and children. His cousin, Craig Potter, wife Beverly and children. His Confusion Hill family, John and Becky Mills; Tony VanSteen and many other family and friends.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 23rd at Confusion Hill. We invite all who knew him to come and celebrate Doug's life.
