On Wednesday, March 3, 2021, Roger Samples, loving husband and father of three daughters, passed away at the age of 76.
Roger was born on July 5, 1944 in Wilburton, Oklahoma to Earl and May Ellen (Clark) Samples. He spent most of his years growing up in Leggett, California with his parents and six brothers and sisters. In 1964, he married Leah (McMain) and together they raised three daughters, Regina, Renee and Rhonda.
Roger married Linda in 1999, and they made their home in the Willits Valley.
When he was 17, he enlisted in the army as an infantryman and then served as a paratrooper, and trained as a sniper, holding records for marksmanship at the time. After his time in the military, he did predator control for the US Fish and Wildlife Service in Mendocino County for more than 30 years, retiring in 2010.
Roger enjoyed the outdoors; he ocean fished, hunted, and was a fine trap shooter. He loved camping at Usal Beach, one of his favorite places. In his later years he spent a lot of time in his vegetable garden and working with his fruit trees. He was a true patriot who was known for his quick-wit, spunk, hot-head and humor.
Roger was preceded in death by his father, Earl, and his mother, May Ellen, his siblings Patricia, Susie, Peggy, and David. He is survived by his wife Linda, his three daughters Gina Cline (Eric), Renee Geen (Tom) and Rhonda Hurlbut (Joe), grandchildren Melissa Malec (Justin), Matthew Fletcher (Sydney), Madeline Cline, Duncan Cline and great-grandchildren Tristan Malec & Emma Malec, his brother Hughey, sister Connie and several nieces, nephews and extended family members.
