Obituary for Steven Russell Blough

Steven Russell Blough passed away in his hometown, Willits, CA in the early morning of November 28, 2016, after a 19-year battle with cancer. He was 69 years old.

A brief military service conducted by the American Legion will be held on Saturday, December 17th at 11 AM at the American Legion Veteran's Hall in Willits. A celebration of Steve's life is tentatively scheduled for Earth Day, Saturday, April 22nd to be held at his house in Brooktrails. Details to follow at a later date.

Steve and then-wife Mary Ellen moved to Willits in 1979 with their two kids, River and Meadow. They bought land in Spring Creek and built a house in the redwoods together from reclaimed lumber. Steve moved on and eventually remarried to Heather in 1984. He and Heather had 2 sons together, Spencer and Jordan.

During the early 80s, Steve became well-known in the footbag (hacky sack) circuit as a professional footbag player and he authored the book "Footbag Dance".

In the local community, you could catch Steve coaching at one of his kids soccer games, in the park kicking footbag, or volunteering at the local elementary school. If he wasn't there, he was probably working on one of his oil paintings, restoring his 1926 Model T, or remodeling a home. Above all, he was known for being "pops" or "dad" to the Blough kids, and that was what he was most proud of.

Steven Russell Blough was born on August 24, 1947 to Jack and Florence Blough in Hastings, NE. His early childhood was spent on numerous military bases due to his father's career as a pilot. From 1965-1969, Steve served in the Navy Seabees and served a tour in Vietnam. After his service, Steve attended college at California College of Arts and Crafts.

And lastly, his loyal dog Sweety who was a constant loving companion.

Steve was preceded in death by his parents, and his older brother, Ronald Blough.
