As a former EDHS student of Sergio's, I will always remember his gentle personality, the strength of his encouragement and his kindness to his learners. This world needs more souls like Sergio's.

Mr. De Paoli was my Essex High art teacher and no other teacher influenced me more than him. I myself have just recently retired teaching 29 years as an high school art teacher and it was Mr. De Paoli who provided both the inspiration and instruction that allows for me to pursue my successful career. His personality embodied a restless creativity that few individuals possess. Although I only met him a few times after high school, his influence remains with me to this day. I will never forget him. My condolences to his family. Sorry for the late entry as I just got the news.

My condolences to the family of this sweet and generous man. He was perhaps the greatest influence on me as a young man wanting to pursue a career in art. Always gracious with his instruction, kind in his praise and generous with his enthusiasm. He was a gifted artist, a gentle soul and a lovely man. Thank you, Mr De Paoli - your legacy will be the smiles on the thousands of students who came into your classroom unsure and uninspired and left encouraged and enlightened.

My sympathy to Sergio's family. Although I didn't take Art as a student at E.D.H.S., I was fortunate to have been a colleague for 5 years after graduating from university. During that time, Sergio donated a lovely autumn landscape to the school to raffle for fund raising. I was the lucky winner, and I have had the chance to both appreciate the painting, which reminds me of Muskoka where I have a cottage, and the artist and the wonderful person that Sergio was, every day (since 1978!).

Hello, Please excuse my late addition to this book. I wasn't sure if I should send it,then I gave my head a shake and said yes. I had your father as a Art Teacher at Essex high school back in the late 60's. He inspired me to do so much. I find the things or they way I work are influenced by his art classes. Your father installed a darkroom in a corner of the classroom and we started printing B&W prints from colour negatives. We were all amazed. I became a photographer and worked at the Star of over 30 years. Your father let us try so many medias in his class. He was a very patient man. It is too bad I didn't tell him how much he influenced my life. I'm sure you have many memories of your Dad. Well he was a very awesome teacher to a very scared shy kid starting high school. Please accept my sincere condolences.

My sincere condolences to Mr DePaoli's Family. He was my Art teacher at Essex High in the 80's, and I have often looked back to his many inspirational words about art, and how he related them to life. His thumb print art signatures in my yearbooks, and my memories of him will always be cherished.

To the DePaoli Family,
Our family is saddened to hear of your loss. Our father, Lasse Pohjola, was a local violinist, and we recall Sergio with fond memories as a good friend to him. Our father and our family had great respect for him as an artist and person. His talent and many contributions to the arts will be missed. On behalf of our late father and our family, we send our deepest condolences.

To the De Paoli family.
I was fortunate enough to work and teach with Sergio at Essex High for 30 years. He was such a pleasant and kind person. I was more than fortuate when he agreed to paint my wifes portrait, what a wonderful portrait it was. He came to our house, and when he set up the easel my four sons sat on the floor and watched in amazement as he brought the canvas to life. He encouraged to be what they wanted to be. Please accept my deepest condolences at the passing of such a wonderful father and a role model for humanity. My thoughta and prayers are with you all. Sincerely Nick Krayacich

I had the honour of being in Mr. Di Paoli's art class in grade 9. He was so passionate about art, and such a kind soul. I have fond memories of kids waiting in line for him to paint or draw a picture in their yearbooks.

He will be sadly missed. God bless all of his family during this difficult time. You will all be thought of.

Dear De Paoli Family;

I too enjoyed the days I spent in your father's art class back in 1969 when I was in the 9th grade. He did a charcoal sketch of me which I have cherished over the years knowing it was drawn by a great master portrait artist. He had such a wonderful soft endearing way of introducing the subject of art to the novice drawer. I will always remember is sweet smile and kind words.

DePoli family - I never had your Dad as a teacher, but I can remember him always saying hi or nodding his head to the students as they passed in the hall. Even though he didn't know me, it made me feel special when he smiled at me and I loved looking at his art and sculptures in the classroom.

Mr. De Paoli had a very kind, sincere and heartfelt energy directed to everyone. Some of my best memories of high school were in his class. He brought out the best in everyone. I was very fortunate to have met him and have him as a teacher at EDHS. Inspiring man, artist of life.

My sisters and brother were sitting and talking about Mr. DePaoli. We all agreed on one thing and that was that he was the best art teacher that Essex High had. I forgot about the "Thumb Print" art in the Yearbooks until it was mentioned here.
Thank you Mr. DePaoli for some great memories.
Our condolencs to his family and friends.

I loved art class. Mr. De Paoli had a way of providing a bit of structure with a lot of latitude. In his class you didn't see the rebellious behaviour so common among us - instead his gentle way of encouraging us all ensured our work was done next time. His name will always come to mind when I think of my high school days (and ahem....cough... that was some time ago). My sincere sympathies are with his family. Thank you for sharing him.

I am so sorry to hear that such a kind, talented man has passed away. The first thing I thought of was his thumb print art in my year book. He could turn almost anything into a work of art. My daughter loves to paint and draw and I have often told her about Mr DePaoli's talents and have pointed out his portraits displayed in the mall. I am so sorry for your loss but knowing how many young lives he touched must be a wonderful comfort for his family.

I have not seen Sergio in over a year but I do remember when we use to visit him at home and he would show us his violins and all the work that went into making them. He was a true artist with his hands. I remeber well the last time we spoke at the studio about his paintings. Specially the one called "The Wine Taster". I was moved to hear the history behind it that I purchased a limited print of it and I see it every day proudly displayed in our home. I am sure he touched a lot of people with his art and he will be missed. Our prayers go out to the family who lost more than an artist, but also a father, grandfater, friend and teacher. Rest in peace my friend.

Mr. De Paoli was my home room teacher for three years at EDHS as well as the best art teacher I ever had. His warm smile and kind words made school easier. His talent was seconf to none. I still look at his "thimb print painting" everytime I open my year book. He was a wonderful human being and the world has lost an artistic talent that will never be replaced. Rest In Peace Sir.
