John H. Mathews, age 90, of 1751 Smith Street, Wisconsin Rapids, WI died Tuesday, February 26, 2013 at Ministry St. Joseph Hospital, Marshfield, WI.
Funeral Services are 11:00 AM Friday, March 1, 2013 at Saints Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Wisconsin Rapids, WI. Rev. Jim Altman will officiate. Burial in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be held at Ritchay Funeral Home in Wisconsin Rapids, WI from 4:00-7:00 PM Thursday and Friday at the Church from 10:00-11:00 AM. There will be a Knights of Columbus Rosary at 6:30 PM Thursday at the funeral home.
John was born September 27, 1922 in Spring Lake, Minnesota to Frank and Mary (Gross) Mathews. He married Arvilla Schueller on June 28, 1947 in Marshfield, WI. John was a letter carrier for the U.S. Post Office retiring in 1977. John "Armin" was also employed at Ritchay Funeral Home in Wisconsin Rapids, WI for over 40 years.
John served in the U.S. Navy during World War II from December 16, 1942 until January 6, 1946. While serving, John's ship, the U.S.S. Lansdowne, transported Japanese Emperor Hirohito to the U.S.S. Missouri to sign the terms of surrender to end World War II. He was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans, the Knights of Columbus, Council #1558 of Wisconsin Rapids and the National Association of Letter Carriers.
John is survived by his wife, Arvilla; two sons, Joel (Caren) Mathews of Wisconsin Rapids, WI and James (Mary) Mathews of Waupaca, WI; two daughters, Julie Arneson of Wausau, WI and Joan (Scott) Brueggen of Wisconsin Rapids, WI; 10 grandchildren, Sonja, Christian, Brian, Kelly, Katie, Andrew, Josh, Ben, Hope and Sean; nine great grandchildren, and one brother, Maurice Mathews of Wisconsin Rapids, WI. John was looking forward to a tenth great grandchild, who will be born in March 2013.
John was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, Frank Jr., George, William, Thomas and Donald and one sister, Christine Manning.
