George O. Van Ert, age 85, of Wisconsin Rapids (town of Seneca) died Wednesday October 4, 2017 at Edgewater Haven in Port Edwards.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday October 7, 2017 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Nekoosa. Rev. Dennis Schwalenberg will officiate, Burial will be at the Village of Port Edwards Cemetery with military rites provided by Nekoosa VFW Post #5960. Visitation will be held at the church on Saturday from 9:30 AM until the time of service at 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be designated to Bethlehem Lutheran Church. George was born December 20, 1931 in Wisconsin Rapids to George and Elenor (Trudell) Van Ert. He served in the US Navy from 1950 to 1954. George married Dorothy Murray on March 10, 2001 in Wisconsin Rapids. For 38 years he was employed by Nekoosa Papers Inc. including 31 years in the finishing room in Port Edwards.

George was a 45 year member of the Eagles Club and also of the NRA. He was an outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and cutting pulp and fire wood. George loved dancing to country music and polkas. He and Dorothy enjoyed traveling including trips to Hawaii, Germany, Alaska and Ireland as well as five cruises and bus trips of the United States. George was greatly honored to go on the Honor Flight to Washington DC.

He is survived by his wife Dorothy Van Ert; six children Dottie (Nick) Milkey, James (Judy) Van Ert, Dale (Brenda) Van Ert, Dawn (Steve) Allen, Debbie Rebolledo and Kim (Bill) Grover; 12 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; four step children Phyllis (Ron) Millard, James (Joyce) Murray, Walter E. Murray and Shawn Murray; step daughter in law Pam Murray; 11 step grandchildren, 31 step great grandchildren and four step great great grandchildren; four sisters Barbara Trickle, Joan Dolan, Carol Bowen and Laura (Ron) Collins and sister in law Marlene Van Ert.

George was preceded in death by his parents; daughter Darlene Van Ert; brothers Donald and Jim Van Ert; brothers in law Bill Dolan and Jim Bowen and two step sons Richard and Scott Murray.
