Gerald Paul Wirtz, 79, passed away on May 31, 2017 in Phoenix AZ.

Born in Cranmoor WI, on December 22, 1937, Gerald was the son of the late Theodore and Grace Wirtz. He graduated from Maryheart High School in 1955. Gerald then earned a Bachelor of Science degree from St. Norbert University and a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering degree from Marquette University. He went on to earn with his PhD in the field of Materials Science from Northwestern University.

On June 3, 1961, he was united in marriage to Darlene Haupt and together they had three daughters. Gerald was a professor of Ceramic Engineering at the University of Illinois for 25 years. He was a very active person with many interests. Gerald spoke multiple languages, traveled often to other countries, made close friends where ever he went, and was a life-long seeker of knowledge. Gerald enjoyed many outdoor activities, but he had a special passion for running and golf. He also loved every opportunity to spend time with his large family.

He will be deeply missed by his wife of almost 56 years as well as his daughters and sons-in-law; Cynthia (Mark, dec'd) Worley, Melissa (Steve) Paulik, Lauralee (Jim) Altendorf and eight grandchildren; Katie, Michael, Matthew, Cody, Jonathan, Patrick, Marlee, and Benjamin. He is survived by six sisters, Doris (Ken, dec'd) Dakins, Helen (Jesse Jackson) Lipka, Mary (Phil, dec'd) Macht, Bonnie (Mike) Breza, Rose Davis, and Gen (Mickhal Locklear) Wirtz; and two brothers, Bill (Elaine, dec'd) Wirtz and Nick (Debra) Wirtz. He will also be missed by his in-laws Arla (Ted, dec'd) Wirtz, Sallee (Dan, dec'd) Wirtz, Jesse Jackson, Mike Breza, Deb Wirtz, and Mickhal Locklear; as well as countless nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son-in-law Mark Worley; infant twin siblings, Katherine and Kenneth Wirtz; sister, Ruth Fochs; and brothers, Theodore and Dan Wirtz; as well as his in-laws Ken Dakins, Leon Fochs, Elaine Wirtz, Phil Macht, Jerry Lipka, and Willie Davis.

The funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 10 at the Queen of Heaven Catholic Funeral Home in Mesa, AZ at 2:00 pm.
