Pfc. Gerald F. (Bud) Wipfli

After 73 years, the United States Army is bringing Pfc Gerald Wipfli home to his family to be laid to rest.

Gerald was born February 13, 1921 in Nekoosa to Dominick and Anna (Brickner) Wipfli. He attended school in Nekoosa and worked at Nekoosa Port Edwards Paper Co. for a short time before entering the Army in September of 1942.

Gerald was reported missing in action in November of 1944. He was last seen in Schmitt, Germany and was not present on the reorganizing of his Army Unit. He was presumptively declared deceased in November of 1945.

The family of Gerald was notified on July 27th of 2017 that his remains had been located in Schmitt, Germany by a Utility Company laying cable in 2010. His remains were identified by DNA testing.

Gerald is being returned to his family for a full Military funeral at Sacred Heart Church with burial to follow at Riverside Cemetery, next to his mother and father in Nekoosa.

Gerald is survived by one sister Elizabeth (Wipfli) Barth Michaels, many nieces and nephews and special friends Ed and Anita Tiebax of the Netherlands. Gerald was preceded in death by his parents Dominick and Anna Wipfli, 3 brothers George, Edmund, and Joseph Wipfli. 9 sisters Bertha Stellmacher, Helen Gray, Josephine Paulson, Margaret Martin, Eleanor Hostetter, Genevieve Weinbauer, Madeline Brown, MaryAnn Moreau, and Geraldine Garcia.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 am Saturday September 23, 2017 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Nekoosa. Rev. John Swing will officiate. Visitation will be held at the church from 10:00 am Saturday until time of service at 11:00 am. Burial, with Military Rites, will be at Riverside Cemetery in Nekoosa.
