Harold L. Alft Obituary
Alft, Harold L.

Harold L. Alft age 94, Wisconsin Rapids, (formerly of Nekoosa and Kissimmee, Florida), passed away on November 8, 2017. Harold was one of 11 children born to Edward and Mabel (Lagging) Alft on February 20, 1923 on a farm outside of Kellner. He was married for 40 years to Dorothy Jane (Peterson) Alft of Wisconsin Rapids, who passed away on August 10, 1985. He married Pauline Higgins of Kissimmee Florida where they resided for 15 years. She passed away in April, 1999.

Harold served in the Army Air Force during WWII, stationed in Newfoundland and Nova Scotia. He worked in the lumber business for many years, starting out at Kellogg's Lumber Company in Wisconsin Rapids. He took over as manager for Kellogg's in Nekoosa and was later employed by the Town of Port Edwards until he retired in 1986.

Harold had a green thumb and spent many hours in his garden growing everything from popcorn to blueberries, sharing his bounty with family and friends. Even as his eyesight began to fail he continued to read his favorite Western novels and relished his wins at the Sheepshead table. He was active in the senior center in Kissimmee Florida where he played harmonica with their country music band. He enjoyed his family, especially the great grandchildren when they all gathered in Madison.

Harold is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Patrick Kosharek of Wisconsin Rapids (formerly of Madison) and a son, Gerald of Evansville; two granddaughters, Jessamyn Cunningham of Mt. Horeb and Gillian Kosharek of Burlingame, California; five great grandchildren, Isaac and Elizabeth of Mt. Horeb; Olya, Dantia and Adam of Burlingame CA. In addition, he is survived by five sister-in-laws Marly Alft, Virginia Alft, Carol Alft, Sue Alft (all of Wisconsin Rapids), Mary Ann Sippl (of Door County); and one brother-in-law Gene Longpre (of Mohawk MI). He is also survived by a plethora of nieces and nephews.

He is further survived by his stepson Jamie (Melanie) Higgins of Moreland, Georgia and their children Bonnie Hussey of St. Cloud, FL and Levi Higgins of Olympia, WA.

He was preceded in death by his parents, both wives, seven brothers Carl, Oscar, Lester, Jerry, Edward, Dale and Francis; three sisters, Delores Downing, Margaret Longpre and Eleanor McLellen; sister-in-laws, Connie Alft, Elaine Alft, and Joan Alft; two brother-in-laws Larry Downing and Harold McLellen. He was also preceded in death by his step grandson Chase Higgins.
