Helen Graff Obituary
Graff, Helen

Helen Marie (Kuehl) Cartwright Graff, 91, passed peacefully on October 23, 2017. She was a long-time resident of Port Edwards and the Wisconsin Rapids area.

Helen's funeral will be held Saturday, November 4, 2017, at 11:00 AM, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 990 3rd St., Port Edwards, WI, with visitation at the church from 10:00 to 11:00 AM. Rev. Daniel Bohn will officiate. Feldnler/Ritchay Funeral Home is assisting the family.

Helen was preceded in death by her first husband, Burton "Burt" Cartwright, and by her second husband, Gerald "Jid" Graff. She is survived by her sister, Marlyn (Kuehl) Mauritz of Chanhassen, MN, and her sister's children, Lyn Yount and Kathy (Jim) Mancell, and their children. She is also survived by Jid's son, Dan (Karen) Graff of Kronenwetter, WI, and their children and grandchildren.

Helen taught English in several area middle and high schools for over 40 years, retiring from the Wisconsin Rapids school system. She earned a BA in English from UW-Oshkosh and an MA from UW-Stevens Point. Her commitment to education continued when she established the Helen Cartwright Graff Scholarship to provide financial assistance to deserving local students attending UW-Oshkosh. Helen said she wanted to help the recipients obtain the same quality education and life skills she received at UW-Oshkosh.

An active member of the community, Helen enjoyed book clubs, bridge clubs and Bible study groups. She was a dedicated member of the congregation of Trinity Lutheran Church in Port Edwards. Helen was one of the leaders of the Common Thread Quilters group, which met in her basement sewing room for many years. They created over 3,000 quilts, which they donated to charitable organizations for distribution to children and others in need. Helen crafted many beautiful quilts now treasured by her family and friends.

Helen had a passion for travel, poetry, books, classic movies, and music. She also cherished time with friends and family. She loved theater, Broadway shows, and opera. She supported the arts locally, as well. Helen appreciated a great storyteller, an exceptional meal, and a beautifully tailored jacket. Her quick wit, inspirational spirit, and generous heart will be missed by all who knew her.

Memorial donations may be made to the Helen Cartwright Graff Scholarship Fund, c/o Incourage Community Foundation, Inc., 478 East Grand Ave., Wisconsin Rapids, WI 54494, or in Helen's name to Trinity Lutheran Church Memorial Fund, 990 3rd St., Port Edwards, WI 54469.
