Harry Sechrist Obituary

ATLANTA, GA Harry Spurgeon Sechrist, 88, formerly of Louisville, Ky., closed his earthly chapter of life and began his final chapter in the presence of his Heavenly Father on December 28, 2012, in Atlanta, Ga., where he had been residing since July 2010. Born on February 10, 1924, to Harry David and Maggie Landis Sechrist in Hellam, he attended Lehigh University and graduated with a degree in electrical engineering and architecture in 1946, after which he took a position with the General Electric Company where he would remain for a career of forty years. Much of his GE career was spent in Aerospace Electrical Systems and Gas Turbines Divisions. He had the distinction of leading the team that built the electrical system for the Apollo Lunar Module, which took the first men to the moon and later provided the lifeboat for Apollo 13, allowing it to return safely to the Earth. Not long after starting with General Electric he married the love of his life, Elaine Roberts of Schenectady, NY. Elaine was the youngest of a family of ten, and Harry was an only child. Elaine preceded Harry in death in 1991. He was a loving husband and father, a respected businessman, and a good and decent Christian man. He kept his wry sense of humor to his last days. He is survived by two daughters, Gail Fisher of Dunwoody, Ga., (William Fisher) and Jan Stone (Cleve Stone) of Louisville, Ky., seven grandchildren, Allison Fisher Shilling (Mark Shilling), Michael Fisher, Stephen Fisher (Brittney Elko), David Stone, Joshua Stone (Jessica Stone), Christopher Stone, and Krystal Stone and six great-grandchildren. He was a member of the Southeast Christian Church in Middletown, Ky. His Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Friday, January 4, 2013 at Highlands Family-Owned Funeral Home, 3331 Taylorsville Rd. with burial to follow in Cave Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Highlands. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made in his name to the Charcot-Marie-Tooth Association of America, P.O. Box 105, Glenolden, PA, 1-800-606-2682, x105 Harry was afflicted with the CMT neuropathy and this association sponsors research for a cure.
