Throughout his life, Mr. Appell's special interest was the City of York, in particular its downtown, center city core. During his leadership, Susquehanna Pfaltzgraff built the City's two premier office buildings, 96 South George and the Susquehanna Commerce Center, as well as rehabilitating many downtown homes and office buildings. Individually, he participated in the restoration of a large number of center city structures. He played a leading role in the construction of the baseball stadium and the Marketview Arts building. He led the committee that was responsible for the Murals of York.
Mr. Appell was a compassionate man with a strong sense of tradition and righteous action, who cared deeply for the education of all youth and embodying for them important values. He was a tremendous influence on innumerable individuals and a role model and mentor for a great many young leaders of the community today.

I just recently learned of the passing of this beautiful man. Louis served on the Board of GPU when my husband was chair. We had many good times with Louis and Jody and always kept in touch. I was delighted to be invited to spend some time with them last year at their beautiful home. It was an experience I will treasure and never forget. Louis was first class all the way, a gentle, kind and good man.. I send my love and condolences to Jody and the family.

I'm Mike Boll with Albert Boll & Sons. I was very proud to have the honor of working for Louie on a lot of his home projects over the years. I found Louie's property to be a very special place. He was a man that knew what he wanted. Might of changed his mind in the middle of a project or two but we always Bgot it right in the end!!!!

Louis Appell was the leading citizen of York County, and an outstanding example of the kind of civic-minded, generous, and wise gentleman that one sometimes encountered not so many years ago. York, gardens, the arts, education, and England were some of his interests and loves.
What a wonderful opportunity to have known him and to have worked with him on so many projects to make this world a better place. I was thrilled that he accepted my invitation to have the Life Sciences Building at York College named for him.
All honor to his name.

Susquehanna Heritage

June 29, 2016

The Board of Directors and staff of Susquehanna Heritage are saddened by the loss of Louis J. Appell, Jr., York County's greatest benefactor. Mr. Appell loved York and York County and worked tirelessly to make it a better place to live and to visit. He believed in, and supported, our important impact along the river, serving as a charter member of our Board of Directors and as a strong partner as we worked with other organizations to preserve land, create parks, and strengthen our river communities to shape the Susquehanna Riverlands as a destination for outdoor fun and cultural exploration. We will forever value the wisdom, guidance and forethought he shared and we will deeply miss him. Our thoughts are with his family.
