Clyde P. Hilker, 95, passed away Saturday, July 23, 2016, at York Hospital.
Mr. Hilker was born in Glen Rock on September 22, 1920, son of the late Spurgeon M. and Margaret (Marshall) Hilker.
Clyde served in the U.S. Army during WWII with the 7th Armored Division Co.C-23rd Infantry Battalion under General Hassbrock. He also served with the British Army under General Montgomery on our drive to the Baltic Sea where the war ended May, 1945. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal with two bronze battle stars, European-African Middle Eastern Campaign medal, Combat Infantry badge, Army Occupant medal of WWII and the World War II Victory medal.
Former employers include York Wallpaper for 25 years, Certainteed Co. for 16 years and York Wall Covering for 4 years, from which he retired.
He was a member of St. Jacobs Lutheran Church, York New Salem, since 1935. Life memberships include V.F.W. and past Commander of V.F.W. Post 5265 Spring Grove, American Legion Post 403 Glen Rock, Harrisburg 7th Armored Division Assoc. and CO Officer in Charge, Scotland School for Veterans Children, Indiantown Gap National Cemetery Memorial Council, Vigilant Fire Co. and Social Club, York County Racing Club, 2004 Hall of Fame Inductee, Vigilant Fire Co. and social club and the Viking Athletic Assoc. Additional memberships and accomplishments: Disabled American Veterans Commanders Club, U.S. Olympic Partner Society, Williams Grove Old Timers Eastern Museum of Motor Racing, pit steward and starter flag man at Williams Grove Jalopy stock cars races, U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary - Flotilla #1402, retiring after 35 years, York New Salem and Stoverstown Fire Co., Tri-Community Ambulance Assoc., York New Salem Lions Club, awarded by Lions International the"Citizen of the Year" in 2001, Gettysburg Moose Lodge #1526 and honorary member of Moosehart, A.A.R.P. of Jefferson Chapter 3669, honorary member of United Steelworkers of America 12731, and Certainteed Retirees Club #37 A.U.S.W.O.A. Charter member of American Motorcycle Assoc., White Rose Motorcycle Club, Bowling Green Auto Racing Assoc. Preservation Society and National Hot Rod Assoc.
Survivors include four daughters, Jean L. Hilker, Janice L. Bartram and her husband, Robert, Joan L. Evanitus and her husband, Martin, and Judy L. Angel; 17 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren; and a half sister, Mary Rife. He was preceded in death by a son, Rodney E. Hilker, a daughter, Jayne L. Neiman, three grandsons, a half brother, Edward Hilker, stepmother, Carrie (Mesberger) Hilker and companion of 32 years, Catherine Folkemer.
Funeral service will be held Wednesday, July 27, 2016 at 10 a.m. at St. Jacobs Lutheran Church, 99 E. George St., York New Salem. Officiating will be his pastor, Lisa Hair. Final resting place will be in St. Jacobs Union Cemetery with full military rites by the York County Veterans Honor Guard. A viewing will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. prior to the service at the church.
In lieu of flowers, at the family's request, memorial contributions may be made to the York Cancer Center, Patient Help Fund, 25 Monument Rd., York, PA 17403.
