NEW FREEDOM Curtis S. Winter, Sr., 83, died Thursday, September 12, 2013, at the Barbara J. Egan Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Shrewsbury. He was the husband of Louise E. (Alwine) Winter to whom he was married 61 years on April 5, 2013. A viewing will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, September 17, 2013, from J.J. Hartenstein Mortuary, Inc., 24 N. Second St., New Freedom. Services and burial will be private. Born February 1, 1930, in New Freedom, Curtis was the son of the late Lloyd Henry and Rosa Lee (Cook) Winter. Curtis worked as a heat treater/welder at the former American Insulator in New Freedom for 30 years, until they closed. He then went to work for Key Plastics in Winterstown for 20 years before retiring. Curtis served in the Korean War as a Navy Corpsman attached to the U.S. Marine Corps 1st Division. He was a life member of New Freedom V.F.W. Post 7012 and a member of Austin L. Grove American Legion Post 403 in Glen Rock. Curtis was also a member of the Rooster Club in York, and enjoyed collecting and restoring antique cars. In addition to his wife, Curtis is survived by two sons, Curtis S. Winter, Jr. and his wife, Kathleen A., and Dennis R. "Beans" Winter and his wife, Sheryl, all of New Freedom; a daugter, Jacquelyn E. Walker and her husband, William R. of Glen Rock; five grandchildren, Amber S. Hoiland, Michael C. and Kevin T. Winter, all of New Freedom, and Ethan W. Walker and Jenna E. Walker, both of Glen Rock; and two great-grandchildren, Everett A. Winter and Jaxson R. Hoiland. He is also survived by a special niece, Brenda J. Wallen of Shrewsbury; and a special cousin, Edward Benedict of Tennessee. He was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister. Memorial contributions may be made to St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 25, New Freedom, PA 17349, to benefit The Lord's Lunch ministry.
