Dennis R. Mills, 63, died Monday, January 2, 2017, at his home. He was the loving husband of Gwen L. (Ostrander) Mills. Denny and Gwen celebrated their 36th wedding anniversary on September 27, 2016.
Born May 24, 1953, in McConnellsburg, he is the son of Paul D. Mills of Hellam Township and the late Pearl M. (Ficks) Mills.
For more than 40 years, Denny operated Willow Tree Farm, LLC, where he trained and bred Thoroughbred Race Horses with his father. For the majority of his career he raced at Penn National Race Course in Grantville, where he won the first race on opening night in 1972 with LeGrandjour. He served as president of the Pennsylvania Chapter HBPA from 1996-1997.
Denny is a 1971 graduate of Eastern York High School. He is a past president of the Hellam Area Jaycees, and he regularly attended ValleyView Alliance Church. Denny's hobbies included golfing, hunting, visiting Florida in the fall and spending time with family and friends. He considered his farm in Hellam as his sanctuary, where he enjoyed mowing and foaling baby horses in the spring.
In addition to his wife, Gwen, and his father, Paul, he is survived by his son, Daniel P. and his wife, Jenna Mills of Parkville, MD; his daughter, Sarah C. and her husband, Mitchell Nye of York; two grandchildren, Dennis L. and Sadie R. Nye; and a grandchild on the way. He is also survived by his brother, Steven P. and his wife, Deb Mills of York; a sister, J. Kay and her husband, Rick Shoemaker of York; two nieces; two nephews; and six great-nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held Saturday, January 7, 2017, at 11 a.m. at ValleyView Alliance Church, 200 Alliance Avenue, York, with Pastor Stan Sanger officiating. A viewing will be held Saturday from 9:30 to 11 a.m. at the church. He will be laid to rest at the Mills Family Farm Cemetery.
