Elwood E. Markel Obituary
Elwood E. Markel

Mechanicsburg - Elwood Eugene Markel, 87, of Mechanicsburg, entered into the Presence of God on Friday, January 4, 2019. He was the husband of the late Eleanor M. Markel.

Born on June 23, 1931 in Wellsville, Pa, he was the son of the late Bertha M. (Kinter) and David L. Markel. "Woody" as he was fondly known, honorably served in the US NAVY. He was a faithful member of the Family Worship Center of Carlisle Pike. He was employed as an insurance salesman and in prior years, he was a truck driver. Woody served in Prison Ministries at York County Prison for over fourteen years, leading over 200 men to the Lord. He supported world ministries by donating Bibles. Woody loved his Lord and people; his presence will be deeply missed by his family and friends.

Elwood leaves to cherish his memory four children, Deana Markel, Diana Markel, Dawn Breeden, husband Jim, and E. Michael Markel; three stepchildren, Brian Sackett, wife Peggy, Carol Steis, and Mark E. Sackett; grandchildren, Alisha Newcomer, Scott Breeden, Seth Breeden and Ethan Jay Markel; and several great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Jonathan J. Markel; a stepdaughter, Eleanor Marie Steed; and siblings, Dale Markel, Ruth Tedder, and Joanne Markline.

A viewing will be on Thursday, January 10, 2019 from 3-5 p.m. at the Gladfelter Funeral Home, Inc., 822 East Market St., York, Pa. Full Military Honors by the York County Veterans Honor Guard will be at 4 p.m. The service will begin at 5 p.m. with Pastor Gary Zinger officiating.
