York - Eugene A. Munchel, 88, went home to be with his Lord Sunday May 13, 2018 at The Haven at Springwood. He was the husband of Marie (Byers) Knaub Munchel, and the late Laona (Myers) Munchel.

A visitation will be 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Church, 2935 Kingston Rd. The Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11 a.m. at the church with the Rev. James Menkhus OFM Cap as celebrant. Burial will follow in Holy Saviour Cemetery with full military rites presented by the York County Veterans Honor Guard. The John W. Keffer Funeral Homes and Crematory, Inc., East York, is assisting with the arrangements.

Mr. Munchel was born July 9, 1929 in York, a son of the late Carl J. and Beatrice P. (Stagemyer) Munchel. He was a 1948 graduate of York Catholic High School. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, the Red Lion American Legion Post 0543, and the Izaak Walton League. Gene was employed as a machinist at Dentsply, Myers Sales and Service, and Ashcombe Dairy. He also was co-owner of L and E Lawnmower Parts. He served as an artillery maintenance mechanic in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. When he wasn't "working on a project," Gene was fishing and boating, watching sports or NASCAR, and/or enjoying his favorites...apple dumplings and ice cream. For 30 years he lived by the Susquehanna River in the summer and the Sarasota Bay in the winter.

Gene is survived by his wife; children, Marlin Knaub and wife, Sylvia, Linda Chronister and husband, Preston, Diana Smith, Carolyn Milner and husband, Sam, Patricia Smith, Steve Munchel, Beverly Kievit and husband, Norm; daughter-in-law, Cindy Knaub; 21 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Margaret Keim and Barbara Jacobs; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a stepson, Mitch Knaub; a granddaughter, Carrie McCrary; and brother and sisters, Donald Munchel, Marie Fredericks, and Mary Ellen Dellinger.
