Ione Chock Obituary
Ione Chock

York - Ione Nan Serata Chock died on September 11, at the age of 91.

Ione, known to almost everyone as Onie, was born on March 21, 1927, grew up in Bridgeton, NJ, and spent the preponderance of her life in York, Pennsylvania where she raised her family, and became a community leader. She was a past President of the Board of the Temple Beth Israel Sisterhood, a prime mover in the York Jewish Community Center where she served as President of the Ladies Auxiliary and was also President of the Jewish Charities Board. Onie was a vociferous supporter of and volunteer for Planned Parenthood. Outspoken but never strident, Onie was an activist involved in a wide range of organizations and served on the boards of the Red Cross, United Way, Mental Health Services and the College Club. She advocated for marginalized communities in York and nationally, and an advocate for progressive candidates and public officials both locally and nationally. Always intellectually curious and engaged, Onie was an enthusiastic member of local book and film groups and a supporter of the York Symphony Orchestra and the Strand Capital Performing Arts Center (the Appell Center for the Performing Arts).

Onie graduated from Russell Sage College with a B.A. in Biology and Chemistry in 1948 and was employed as a research scientist at the University of Pennsylvania, work she loved and in which she took great pride. In 1982 Onie and her husband Bob Chock moved from York to Secaucus, New Jersey where she had an exciting second career as a successful realtor with Burgdorff Realtors and Prudential Properties on the Hudson. She then moved back to York in 1999. Onie excelled at playing Bridge, served as President of The York White Rose Bridge Club, and achieved the status of Life Master.

Above all, Onie reigned as the benevolent and loving matriarch of a large family which she built and nurtured on a foundation of love, trust, respect, and progressive values.

Onie was a lover of oysters, steak tartar, and crossword puzzles.

She was married to Robert Chock for nearly 50 years, who died in 1998, and then to Donald Epstein, who died in 2012. Onie is survived by her sister Maxine, her children Andy, Laurie (and her husband Larry), Jay (and his wife Laura), and Fran as well as seven grandchildren Aron, Jessica, Shana (and her husband Andrea), Nathaniel, Joseph, Estelle, Palwasha, and two great grandchildren, Sylvia and Lena.

The funeral service will be held at 2:30 PM Sunday, September 16, 2018 at Temple Beth Israel, 2090 Hollywood Drive, York, with Rabbi Jeffrey Astrachan, officiating. Kuhner Associates Funeral Directors, Inc., 863 South George Street, York, is in charge of arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, donations should be made to Planned Parenthood, 728 S Beaver St, York, PA 17401, the JCC of York, 2000 Hollywood Dr, York, PA 17403, Temple Beth Israel of York, 2090 Hollywood Drive, York, PA 17403 or the ACLU, 125 Broad St., 18th Fl., New York, NY 10004.
