James Kehr Obituary

James E. Kehr, 90, died Thursday, March 3, 2005, at 11:30 p.m. at Manor Care Health Services North, with his family by his side. For 55 years he was the husband of Margaret L. (Smith) Kehr, who died July 9, 1992. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. on Tuesday, March 8, 2005, at St. John's United Church of Christ, 161 North Main Street (Route 24) in Red Lion. Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Burial will be in Red Lion Cemetery. The Rev. Henry Korinth will officiate. Olewiler & Heffner Funeral Home, Inc., 35 Gotham Place, Red Lion, is in charge of the arrangements. Mr. Kehr was born on May 3, 1914, in Dallastown. He was the son of the late Melvin E. and Sadie M. (Knaper) Kehr of Dallastown. He married Margaret Smith on March 28, 1937. From 1947 to 1962, along with his friend, Sterling Stine, he was the co-owner and operator of Kehr & Stine Gulf Service on South Main Street in Red Lion. He also became well known for his custom picture framing, as well as his being the Justice of the Peace in Red Lion, presiding over a dozen marriages. During the 1960's he worked at a number of furniture factories, including Colonial Products Yorktowne Cabinets as a Quality Control Inspector. For more than 20 years, he was a Title Clerk for Runkle's Title and Tag Service in Red Lion. He served on the Consistory of St. John's UCC Church, and was a member of AARP and Riverside Masonic Lodge in Wrightsville. He is survived by his two sons, Philip Edward and his wife, Joanne of York, and Jan E and his wife Barbara and their son, Keith, of Felton; by his brother, Wade T. Kehr of Dallastown; and by his sisters, Vera Reynolds of Manhattan Beach, California, and Doris Lamon of York. He was preceded in death by brothers, Charles Knaper of Hot Springs, Arkansas, Richard and Ronald Kehr of Dallastown, Gerald Kehr of Red Lion; and sister, Elva Kehr of Dallastown. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. John's Pipe Organ Fund, 161 N. Main St., Red Lion, PA 17356; or Alzheimer's Association of South Central PA, 3544 N. Progress Ave., Suite 205, Harrisburg, PA 17110.
