YORK Mary G. Stephenson, 89, died at 1:10 a.m. Tuesday, June 22, 2010, at Rest Haven York. She was the wife of the late Charles F. Stephenson, the retired president of YESCO. Mrs. Stephenson was born August 9, 1920, in St. Clair, Pa., a daughter of the late Roy H. and Evelyn (Vaile) Gorman. At age 18 she left the coal regions of Pennsylvania and moved to York. Soon after she arrived she developed an unending love for the City of York. Mary Stephenson was the Women's Editor of the York Sunday News from 1964 until 1989, and continued to write her popular "Party Line" column until 2005. She was a graduate of Thompson's Business School in York. She was a member of York Twinning Association, served as president of Central High School PTA, was an honorary member of Delta Gamma Society for women educators, and was a member of Christ Lutheran Church and The Lafayette Club. Prior to joining the staff of the York Sunday News, she was editor for the publication of the 225th Anniversary History Book of York, public relations chair for the United Way of York, chair of the Log House restoration for Historic York, and a member of the advisory board of Family Services. She was a past board member of the Children's Home of York. Mrs. Stephenson was a member and past president of the Young Women's Club. She was the chair of the first Children's Concert sponsored by the Young Women's Club and the York Symphony Orchestra, and was a member of the Women's Network of York. She was a charter member and past president of the Central Pennsylvania Chapter of Women in Communication, where she was named "Outstanding Communicator" in 1984. She received Communications Matrix Awards in 1979, 1980, and 1981, and was listed in the 1982 edition of "The World's Who's Who of Women." She received the Athena Award in 1999, which is an annual award for women selected by the York County Chamber of Commerce for both professional and volunteer work. Mrs. Stephenson is survived by a daughter, Kathleen A. Stephenson of York; two sons, C. Robert Stephenson and his wife, Michelle of York, and Richard S. Stephenson and his wife, Lori of Dover; four grandchildren, Abraham Stephenson, Nathan Stephenson, Brent Vukmer, and Matthew Vukmer; six great-grandchildren; two sisters, Jean Yates of York and Evelyn Kormash of Bradenton, Fla.; and a brother, Lee Gorman of Cape May, N.J. A celebration of Mrs. Stephenson's life will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Christ Lutheran Church, 29 S. George St., York, with the Rev. Marie K. Krueger, Pastoral Associate, officiating. A reception for family and friends will immediately follow at the Lafayette Club, 59 E. Market St., York. Kuhner Associates Funeral Directors, 863 S.
