Philip E. Kessler Obituary
SPRINGETTSBURY TWP. Philip E. Kessler, 76, died Monday, February 25, 2013, at his residence. He and his wife, Patricia (Klinedinst) Kessler were married on June 30, 1960. Philip was born in York on April 7, 1936, the son of the late Walter and Kathryn (Gladfelter) Kessler. Phil was a 1953 graduate of William Penn Senior High School and a 1957 graduate of Millersville University. He later earned his Masters degree from Temple University and was a Social Studies teacher for 37 years. He taught at Northeastern and York City Schools. In addition, he coached baseball and basketball at Northeastern and William Penn. Phil's first love was baseball. He pitched for the Pleasureville Hawks until 1974. He is a member of the York County Central League Oldtimers Hall of Fame and umpired the game for the American Legion, Central and Susquehanna Leagues until 2008. Phil was an active member of Pleasureville United Methodist Church where he served in many capacities including SS Teacher, church Trustee and Lay Representative to annual Conference. Other interests included government, serving as Democratic Committeeman for more than 25 years. He was instrumental in forming the York Chapter of Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Phil was a member of PSEA-R, NEA, Central League Oldtimers and Hawk Gunning Club. He served in the U.S. Army Reserves when he graduated from college. Retirement activities included traveling, golfing and dealing in collectibles having a booth at the former York Antique Center. After retiring from teaching, Phil was a tip-staff in Judge Brillhart's courtroom until 2008. His many interests were cut short by the onset of Alzheimer's Disease. Even through illness, he kept his pleasant, amiable personality. In addition to his wife, he is survived by three children, Kathy Silar, Karole Bentz and husband Paul, and Thomas Kessler all of York; four grandchildren, Spencer and Connor Silar, Hannah and Abigail Bentz and numerous cousins. His love of God, family and country speak clearly of a life worth living. A funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 1, 2013, at Pleasureville United Methodist Church 2606 N. Sherman St., York, with his pastor, Rev. Steven M. Livermore officiating. Burial will be in Mount Zion Cemetery. A visitation will be 9 to 10:30 a.m. Friday at the church.
