Victor L. Hamme Obituary
YORK Victor L. Hamme, 100, died Sunday, July 14, 2013, at the home of his oldest son, Victor R. Hamme. He was married to the late Elizabeth M. (Spangler) Hamme for 67 years. Born in 1913, in York County, he was the oldest son of George W. Hamme and Amanda (Shelley) Hamme. Victor graduated from York High School in 1931 and Gettysburg College in 1935. He taught school in Hellam High School, and was in the York City School District teaching algebra for 32 years at Edgar Fahs Smith Junior High School before his retirement in 1974. Known as Vic, he loved his wife and family and devoted his life supporting them. In addition to teaching full time during the school year, he worked for at least 12 different employers during the summer months and/or over the Christmas holidays. His proudest accomplishment was completing the construction of the family home in 1955 after seven years of hard work. Victor continued to live there independently until after reaching 100 years of age. His favorite hobby was fishing with his brother, Paul. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church of York and a former longtime member of Messiah Lutheran Church, where he served as a councilman and as a member and soloist in the choir. Survivors include his two sons, Victor R. Hamme and his wife, Connie of York, and Robert K. Hamme and his wife, Jennifer of Williston, Vt.; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth; his oldest son Victor's first wife, Linda; a great-grandson; and his two brothers. Graveside services will be held Saturday, August 3, 2013, at 10 a.m. at Mount Zion Cemetery, 3101 Deininger Road, York. The Etzweiler Funeral Home, 1111 E.
