NEW FREEDOM Henry Ritter, Jr., 94, formerly of Parkville, Md., died Tuesday, April 1, 2014, at York Hospital, where he earned his final badge of honor - his angel wings. He was the loving husband of Thelma M. (Baldwin) Ritter, to whom he was married 70 years. A viewing will be held Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. at J.J. Hartenstein Mortuay, Inc., 24 N. Second St., New Freedom. The funeral service will begin at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 8, 2014, at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, 175 E. Main St., New Freedom, with the Rev. George M. Schneider officiating. Full military honors by the York County Veterans Honor Guard will precede the service. Interment will follow the service in Gardens of Faith Memorial Gardens, Baltimore, Md. Born January 29, 1920, in Baltimore City, Md., Henry was the oldest of five children born to the late Henry, Sr. and Anna C. (Lloyd) Ritter. Henry was a member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, New Freedom, where he formerly participated in various social activities. He was also a member of New Freedom VFW Post 7012, a former member of Parkville VFW Post 9083, and the NRA. Henry was an avid ice skater until the age of 89. He enjoyed woodworking, crafts with his daughter, fishing, hiking the Appalachian Trail, oil painting, and coin collecting. He was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII and served in Company C, 22nd Armored Engineers, in the 5th Armored Division. His unit was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation for the Battle of Huertgen Forest and the Croix de Guerre with the Silver Star. After the war, he was a printer by trade. He retired from the Supreme Court as the Chief Publications Officer in 1985. A husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, son, and friend, Henry Ritter, Jr. touched the lives of so many. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Henry "Hank" Ritter, III and his wife, Kathryn of Goochland, Va.; daughter, Barbara Hoernig and her husband, Douglas of New Freedom; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a sister, Dorothy Heuer of Shrewsbury. He was preceded in death by three siblings.
