Fred Burkins, Jr., 91, husband of the late Doris M. (McCullough) Burkins, passed away Friday, March 10, 2017, at York Hospital.
Born in Colora, MD, December 23, 1925, he was the son of the late Charles F. and Hazel V. (Brown) Burkins, Sr.
He served his country honorably during WWII in the U.S. Merchant Marines. He was employed by IBM, serving as Manager of the York Office Products Division and also as a typewriter repairman. He was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church (York) where he served as a trustee and lay leader in addition to other positions. He also was a member of Boy Scout Troop 94 of Shiloh, the York County Waste Authority, and the American Cancer Society for which he transported patients to appointments for 17 years. He was always available to help anyone in need.
He is survived by his son, Donald and wife, Brigitte (Krause), their daughter Sonja and husband, Jeff Dietrich and their two daughters, Sophia and Julia. He is also survived by his daughter, Jean Bailey and husband, Ray and their two daughters, Christine and fiancé, Michael Ziegler and their son, Kit, and Susan and partner, Ayo Smith-Jackson. He was preceded in death by a sister, Ethel Engel.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, April 8, 2017, at Calvary United Methodist Church, 11 N. Richland Ave., York. Officiating will be the Rev. Dr. Michael Brossman and the Rev. Roland E. Garvin. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family in Prospect Hill Cemetery.
