NEW FREEDOM Edward K. Plata, 82, formerly of Ludlow, Mass., died on Sunday, January 20, 2013, at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of Jeannette M. (Charron) Plata of New Freedom. Following cremation, a visitation will be held from 3 to 5 Thursday, January 24, 2013, J.J. Hartenstein Mortuary, Inc., 24 N. Second St., New Freedom. A memorial service and burial will be held at a later date in Massachusetts at the convenience of the family. Born April 7, 1930, in Springfield, Mass., he is the son of the late Jacob and Mary (Bednarz) Plata. Mr. Plata graduated from the American International College, Springfield, Mass with a BA in Chemistry and also an MBA. He began his career with the former Adell Chemical Company in Holyoke, Mass., and retired from Procter & Gamble Company in 1994 following 30 years of service. During the Korean War he served as a radar technician on B52 bombers. Edward was and accomplished woodworker, loved to travel, was a lap swimmer, enjoyed SCUBA diving, ballroom dancing, and was an avid reader. He was a former member of the Elks Club in Hanover, the Golden Nuggets of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in York, the Phoenix Dance Club, and the White Rose Polka Dancers of York. He served as the second president of the Syncopation Dance Club, Emigsville, for five years. The family would like to thank the many neighbors for their kindness especially the Ellis family. In addition to his wife of 60 years, he is survived by two sons, Steven Plata and his wife Donna of Chicopee, Mass., and Eric Plata and his wife Tina of Perryville, Md,; three daughters, Elaine Sai and her husband Julian of Ludlow, Mass., Elizabeth Stroshine and her husband Michael of Westfield, Mass., and Jennifer Patrie and her husband Matthew of Ludlow, Mass.; grandchildren, Jessica, Dan, Jason, Cheyenne, Kyle, Eric and Teddy; two great-grandchildren, Abigail and Jason; and a sister, Helen Grabowski. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice and Community Care, 224 St. Charles Way, Suite 200, York, Pa 17402.
