Gary E. Eyster Obituary
YORK Gary Eyster passed away July 16, 2013, following a long illness. Gary was a loving father, son, brother and friend. He grew up in York, Pennsylvania. In recent years, he returned to York where he cared for his beloved mother, Mary Eyster, and his sister Jane. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law. Gary pursued his love of art while studying in Europe and received a master of fine arts degree upon returning to the U.S.. He settled, with his family, in Wilmington, N.C. Gary was instrumental in developing the New Hanover County Museum and served several years as Director. Afterwards, he taught portrait painting to enthusiastic students at the local community college until his retirement. He always encouraged his friends and students to pursue their artistic interests and generously shared his knowledge. Above all, Gary was a talented, original, and inventive Artist; always excited to produce art or try out a new technique. His considerable legacy includes bold abstract paintings, photography, and clay sculpture. Gary was a kind, smart man with a funny dry wit who lived his life his way. He is missed by family and friends. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, July 27, 2013, at 10 a.m. at Greenmount Cemetery 721 Carlisle Ave., York, those who wish to attend are asked to meet at the cemetery entrance at 9:45 am.
