James M. Huddleston Obituary
YORK James "Jim" MacLain Huddleston, husband of the late Darlene Mae (Babst) Huddleston, veteran of the second World War, professor and advocate, passed away at his home at Normandie Ridge on Thursday, December 26, 2013, at the age of 92 after a battle with liver cancer. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Patrick Catholic Church at 11 a.m. on Saturday , January 4, 2014. Visitation will take place prior to the service, starting at 10:30 a.m. in the church. Jim was born at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington, D.C., on August 26, 1921, into a military family. A January 1943 graduate of West Point, he was deployed to the European theater shortly after. During WWII, he saw action in Belgium during the Battle of the Bulge. Following the deaths of both his father and older brother, Jim was reassigned to England. Postings during his nearly 30 years' service included many throughout the U.S., three tours in Europe, and an unaccompanied tour in Saudi Arabia. Upon his retirement from the Army in 1966, Jim studied Education at Pennsylvania State University, receiving his Master's degree the following year. He then taught in the Electrical and Electronic Technology (EET) program at Penn State York for 20 years before retiring in 1987. While retired, Jim volunteered his time with the Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) program representing abused and neglected children in court, and with the Literacy Council of York. He was an active member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. It is difficult to sum up the life of a man who left such a substantial impact upon his family and the world around him. In his humble manner he graced the earth with his presence. Jim is survived by his three daughters, Christie (and husband, Rafael) Porrata-Doria, Lynne Huddleston-Ruff, and Patricia Huddleston; as well as his six grandchildren, Rafael and Clara Porrata-Doria, Christian Ruff, John Huddleston, and Michael (and his wife, Shannon) Iatauro. In the spirit of Jim's life, please contribute to in lieu of flowers.
