Steve H. Slobozien Obituary
YORK Steve H. Slobozien, 87, entered into rest Saturday, January 4, 2014, at Country Meadows in Leader Heights. He was the husband of Ellen K. Slobozien for 63 years. A visitation will be 1 to 2 p.m. Thursday at St. Joseph Church, 2935 Kingston Road. The Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 2 p.m. at the church with the Rev. Louis Petruha OFM Cap as celebrant. Full military rites will be presented by the York County Veterans Honor Guard at the church, following the service. The John W. Keffer Funeral Homes and Crematory, Inc., 902 Mt. Rose Avenue, is assisting the family. Mr. Slobozien was born October 14, 1926 in Johnstown, a son of the late James and Anna (Hunko) Slobozien. He was a member of St. Joseph Church where he served as an usher. He was a teacher in the York City School District and coached football and basketball. He was the owner of Teachers Driving School. He served in the U.S. Army during WW II. He was a graduate of University of Pennsylvania and earned a Master's Degree from University of Pittsburgh, and attended West Chester University. He had been Recreation Director for Spring Garden Township and was a member of the American Legion, Red Lion Post, the Hawk Gunning Club, K of C Council 6353, and the Victory AA. Steve is survived by his wife; children, Jim Slobozien and his wife Cindy, Jan and his wife Jessica, Jeff and his wife Kitty, and Joan Kirk and her husband Dr. Malcolm; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two brothers, Pete Slobozien and Paul Slobozien; and a sister, Barbara Lee Trexler. He was preceded in death by a sister, Roseanne Ferrence. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph Church, 2935 Kingston Road, York, PA 17402; or to Hospice and Community Care, 685 Good Drive, Lancaster, PA 17604. Steve's family wishes to thank the staff of Rest Haven-York, York Hospital, and especially Country Meadows Leader Heights for the excellent care provided to him during his illness.
