Lewis H. Bentzel Obituary
YORK Lewis H. Bentzel, 92, entered into rest at 8:25 a.m. on Monday, April 28, 2014, at his home. He was the loving husband of Betty M. (Weinhold) Bentzel and the late Dorothy (Weigard) Bentzel. Lewis and Betty celebrated 36 years of marriage on July 26, 2013. Born September 26, 1921, in Spring Grove, Lewis was the son of the late Bert and Daisy (Krone) Bentzel. He retired from the United States Air Force as a Lieutenant Colonel after having served in World War II and the Korean War. Lewis graduated in 1949 from The Pennsylvania State University and was a life member of the Alumni Association. He had 30 years of service at J.E. Baker Co. before retiring in 1987 as Vice President and co-owner. Lewis was a lifelong member of Dover United Church of Christ and a church council chairman. He was a 32nd degree Mason of Zeredatha Lodge #451 and a member of other Masonic organizations. He was also a member of West Manchester VFW Post 7374 and Shiloh American Legion Post 791. Lewis was a past president of Dover Area School Board, West York Rotary Club, and York Manufacturers Association. He was a chairman of Northern York County Regional Police Pension Board and he was on the Board of Directors and a life member of Outdoor Country Club. In addition to his wife, Betty, Lewis is survived by two daughters, Diane E. Slothower and husband, Steve of Dover, and Susan W. Koppenheffer and husband, Gary of Clemmons, N.C.; six grandchildren, LaDora Ropp, Bradford Harlacker, Alicia and Jason Shaffer, Amy Woods, and A.J. Koppenheffer; 13 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. In addition to his first wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, LuAnn (Bentzel) Shaffer. Services are private at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Salem Union Cemetery. Emig Funeral Home, Dover, is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Compassionate Care Hospice, 1513 Cedar Cliff Drive, Suite 100, Camp Hill, PA 17011.
