Lieutenant Colonel Billy Dana Thornbury Obituary
Lieutenant Colonel Billy Dana Thornbury, Ret., 90, died peacefully in his Yuma, Arizona home on July 4, 2018. As a career Marine, he served in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam.

Lt.Col. Thornbury was born on May 29, 1928 in Bartlesville, Oklahoma to Harold and Sadie Thornbury.

He joined the Marine Corps in 1945 and was stationed in China. He left the Marine Corps and returned to school. He completed his BA at Oklahoma A and M (OSU) in 1952. He rejoined the Marine Corps where he continued to serve his country for 27 years.

Billy retired from the Marine Corps in June of 1977 and moved to Indio, California. Billy met and married his soulmate, Marilyn Bender, on March 25, 1989. They have made their home in Yuma since 1997.

Billy served his country; he served his family as a husband, father, brother, grandfather, and a great-grandfather. Billy loved to tease and had a laugh that was quick and unforgettable. He was an avid golfer up until the last year of his life.

Billy leaves behind his wife of 29 years, Marilyn Thornbury; his daughters: Cyndy Jones (Milt), Suzanne Thornbury, Melissa Thornbury, and Brenda Letendre (Bob); and his sons: Mark Bender (Vickie), and Phil Bender (Jeanna). Billy also leaves behind 12 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 21st at Christ Lutheran Church, 2555 S. Engler Avenue, Yuma, Arizona 85365. A private burial ceremony will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Christ Lutheran Church Building Fund or their favorite charity.
