SPC Corey Ryan Smathers

FAIRBANKS, AK: SPC Corey Ryan Smathers, 22 of Fairbanks, Alaska, formerly of Jacksonville, passed away March 2, 2013 in Fairbanks. He was born February 12, 1991 in Athens.

He was a 2009 graduate of Trimble High School. He was an active member of the United States Army, serving one tour in Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. He was in the Bravo Company 1st Battalion, 24th Infantry Division, 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division at Fort Wainwright in Fairbanks, Alaska.

He is survived by his parents, Jackie F. and Amy L. Nash Smathers of Jacksonville; his wife, Erika Robson of Murray City; one sister, Kaytlynn Smathers of Jacksonville; paternal grandmother, Clara Smathers of Trimble; maternal grandparents, Steve and Donna Nash of Glouster; two nieces, Laken and Elliana Justice; several aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends; and his dog, Riley.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Charles Smathers; and two cousins, Charlie and David Smathers.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday March 12, 2013 at the Bishopville Church of Christ, 6555 S. State Route 78, Glouster, Ohio 45732 with John Wright officiating. Interment will be in the Maplewood Cemetery, Glouster where there will be a military graveside service conducted by the United States Army Color Guard. Friends may call at the church on Monday from 2 to 8 p.m.
