Edward Bedner Obituary

BOSTON - Edward C. Bedner, 77, of Boston, and formerly of Exeter, passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2014, at the home of his sister, Jacqueline Namutka, West Pittston.

He was born on Oct. 4, 1936, and raised in Exeter, the son of the late Edward A. and Julia Busha Bedner. He was a graduate of Scranton Preparatory School. He completed a bachelor's, master's and doctorate in music at Boston University with additional piano study at New England Conservatory of Music. He was a professor of music at Berklee College of Music at the time of his passing.

Edward furthered the careers of very gifted students from around the world, traveling to many countries doing lectures and recitals at regional, national and international conferences on the music of Chopin, Messiaen, Takemitsu, Chen Yi and others. He did extensive public performances in solo recitals, as an accompanist, on television in the Boston area and as a soloist with local orchestras. He was a recipient of a grant for study at Tanglewood Music Center.

For 50 years, Edward generously shared his knowledge and promoted the gift of music internationally through published papers, performing and fine-tuning the skills of his students. Many of his most talented students have continued to further their personal music careers and follow Edwards's varied and valued traditions of teaching and performing.

In addition to his parents, Edward was preceded in death by his sister, Nancy (Bedner) Warren.

He is survived by his sister, Jacqueline Bedner Namutka, West Pittston; nieces, Karol (Namutka) Anderson, Brigantine, New Jersey, Leigh Ann (Warren) Fury, Wendy (Warren) Goff, Brielle, New Jersey; and nephews, Gary Namutka and his wife, Julia, Plains Township, Scott Warren and his wife, Suzanne, Jenkins Township; numerous great-nieces and great-nephews; family and friends.

A memorial Mass will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday in St. Barbara Parish in St. Anthony of Padua Church, 28 Memorial St., Exeter. Visitation for relatives and friends will be from 8:30 a.m. until the time of services in the church. Interment will be in St. John the Slovak Cemetery, Schooley Street, Exeter.

I'll always remember Ed as the teacher who introduced me to the Berg Piano Sonata, which at first perplexed me, but eventually grew to be one of my favorite pieces. A great teacher.

Dear Ed, Professor Bedner, Friend,
Words can't express my sadness. I wish I had gotten to speak with you one last time. You have given so much of yourself to so many, and expected nothing in return. Thank you for all that you have done for so many of us. Rest in peace, dear friend and mentor.
You will be dearly missed.

Dear Ed,

I never got to properly thank you. I didn't get to play for you my composition dedicated to you. I have so much to thank you for, you have left such a mark in my life.

I will always hold dear your words, your wisdom, and memories of the fun luncheons in Chinatown.

I will miss you Ed, see you again somewhere, some day.

All my love.

Ed,

I can't explain how much I enjoyed your lessons when I was your students over 20 years ago. I wish I could visit Boston again and see you again. I won't forget your kindness, your smile, your lessons and how great a teacher you are. Thank you for everything.

Rest in peace. I will love you and miss you always.

Dear Ed Bedner,

I'm going to miss you so much. I know you told me to come see you after my trip to South Africa. Like I came to see you before I left. I had lots of pictures to share with you from the trip, including music and good moments. I'll always remember how you enjoyed seeing pictures and hearing about my experiences on the road, and you sharing with me yours. Thank you so much for being an amazing teacher, mentor and a great human being. You will always represent to me, the spirit of hope and music.

I will always miss your piano lessons, jokes, thoughts and interest in modern technology. You kept coming to school to teach even when your health wasn't in a good condition, that taught me a lot about commitment, your love for teaching and music.

I'll always remember you with a smile, knowing that wherever you are, you're with other beautiful souls like you.

Enjoy this next adventure.

Ed I will never forget the "terrifying" experience of testing out of Music Ed keyboarding with you. You saw that I was nervous and still managed to crack fun at me by saying "ouch, you're gonna make the children cry." I always enjoyed visiting with you and engaging in conversation. You have touched the lives of many, and I am glad to have known you for the short amount of time that I have. Rest easy my friend and I look forward to reuniting again in the presence of our lord and savior.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
